2nd Trimester

Anyone else in baby "denial"?

I'm almost 16 weeks along.  I have a big US schdeuled for Tuesday this week.  My family says to me at breakfast this morning" "So, what baby items have you started buying?"  I'm like "huh?" "nothing yet."  They looked shocked.  My sister then says "Are you in baby denial or something?"  I had to laugh.  I really haven't bought a thing.  I mean no maternity clothes (absolutely no need yet), no baby clothes, furniture, etc...nothing.  I guess we have been thinking about where we are going to put the baby, but that's about it.  Didn't think it was a big deal this early.  Hey, I work a lot and I have a lot on my mind.  Plus, I have a DH and DD to take care of every day.  If I'm not at work, I'm at the gym or T-Ball games or at my second job.  Am I really in "baby denial"?  Is it because it's my second child?  Now I'm all worked up...for nothing?

Re: Anyone else in baby "denial"?

  • lol. nah i dont think baby denial. its hard to get into that buying mode until you know the sex. i have a few ( and i mean few) baby items, but i really want to curb this shopping urge until we know what we are having. :)

I know what you mean. I am 16 weeks too and while I'm starting to show, I haven't felt the baby, don't know the gender, and don't have a name so I don't have that link yet I guess to make it feel totally real.  I think once I feel it or know the gender to start to name it, it's still doesn't seem quite real.

  • For some people being pregnant just doesn't set in until later.  Waiting for the gender as pp said or until they feel movement.

It's very common with ladies who have suffered a lose.  Even after I passed the point of my m/c and had my viability u/s's I just wasn't all that excited about the whole thing.  Don't know when the feeling passed, but it did.

Eh, we're all different, right!?  There are those who start buying stuff when they are only TTC.

  • All very good points.  Why didn't I think of that?
  • I agree. I didnt really start buying stuff till we knew the sex. My SIL was like have you bought anything yet, i was like no...she goes god are you waiting till the last minute!? This was a week after I even found out i was pregnant!! I rolled my eyes.

  • I didn't start buying anything until I was about 23 weeks.  I felt no need to do so any earlier.
  • We haven't bought a single thing.  We've only tossed names around casually.  I think once we find out the sex, we'll start getting "serious" about buying baby gear and getting ready.

  • I don't want to really buy things until I know what I'm going to need.  But I agree, before you know the sex (if you're going to find out), you're a little hesitant. I want to go out and buy, like, everything ... but THEN what'm I gonna do for the next three months?! LOL

Anywho, on the same topic, one of DH's aunt's is sending us a box of baby stuff this week and I'm SO FREAKING excited to look at it and hold it and realize it's mine and for my baby. =)

  • i'm another who hasnt bought ANYTHING yet.  my Mom and I have a pact to not buy anything until we fnd out the sex (she has already broken that pact and bought tons of girl clothing in hopes of having a granddaughter.. lol).

nor have i registered anywhere.. again, waiting to find out what we're having.

we do have names picked out.. kind of.  we still haven't decided on a middle name if we have a girl. lol

  • We only have things people have given us which is mostly clothes at this point.  I did get the stuff and am in the process of making his crib bedding and we bought a few cloth diapers to try but that's it really.  We're waiting for our shower to really buy much.
  • Absolutely!  This is my first and it's definitely not real yet.  I've had 2 ultrasounds and that hasn't helped either.  I'm hoping that once I feel some movement, it will become more real.

About the same here.  I had to break down and buy maternity pants a bit before 23 weeks, though.
