We registered for the Graco SnugRide 32. It gets good reviews, but the reason I like it is because of the weight and length limits. It is recommended that babies stay in rear facing seats until at least 1 year old. Many infant car seats have weight limits of around 22-25 lbs. The SnugRide 32 has a wieght limit of 32 lbs. This means we will not have to invest in another car seat until much later.
B. Bargains reccos the chicco keyfit and snugride. I thought the snugride was a little too "plasticy" feeling for my taste, so we are going with the keyfit.

Chicco, I believe it goes up to 30 lbs, and the snugride is cheap looking IMO - then you can switch to a convertable that can be rear facing until you are ready to turn them around. Our evenflo goes up to 100 lbs so we wont ever need to buy another one
I originally registered for the SnugRide 32 as well, but when I saw it in the store, it was just soooooo huge. I really don't think it would fit in my car.
I've heard good things about the KeyFit, but I don't really like the look of it (sad I know), so we are going with the Peg Perego 30/30 instead. It was rated very well in baby bargains along with the snugride, and keyfit.
I had a Graco snugride for DS and I didn't love it. It looked and felt cheap to me, and I didn't think the foam padding was adequate, especially when DS was a tiny infant. This time around, we are getting the Chicco Key Fit.
The best car seat is one that fits well in your car. The bases have slightly different shapes and so do back seats of cars, so make sure you go to a store where you can try the seat in your car.

This is out-of-date information. One year and 20lbs is the legal minimum for forward facing. However, car seat and safety experts, as well as the AAP recommend rear facing until TWO YEARS.
I think the larger seats are a joke for most people. My DD is 2 and if I had a snugride 32 she would have outgrown it by height only a few months ago (and she's been 97% for height most of her life) and still not have outgrown it by weight (and she's 50% for weight).
But here's the thing... infant car seats are reclined much more than rear facing convertible seats. Which is why older babies usually start to HATE the infant seat. They don't want to be laying down when they aren't sleepy. In the convertible they can see out the window. So I have no regrets about moving her to a convertible around 8mo - and she's still rear facing even though she's over 2.
We are also going with the Chico Keyfit. It has great reviews and the base seems smaller than the Graco. DH has a small two door car so it was important to find something that would fit.

Chicco KeyFit 30 Infant Car Seat
got better reviews from moms than the others suggested from BB book.
