Doulas - How much?

If you are hiring a Doula, how much are you paying (if you don't mind sharing that info)?  I'm thinking about it, but would like an estimate to see if it will be totally out of our price range from the get go.  Thanks!

Re: Doulas - How much?

  • the one we are thinking about getting is $300 for one prenatal visit, all of labor & delivery and one post-natal visit.
  • The average price around here (Atlanta) is $500-550.  I hired one that is an apprentise that is actually willing to do it for $75.  If you find ones that are apprentices they will do it for alot less than the going rate.

  • The average price in my area is $400.  I think this is 2 prenatal appointments, unlimited phone contact and 1 visit after baby is born.

  • They are different in different parts of the country. I would email DONA to get a list of the Doulas in your area. You can also save money by using a Doula who has gone through the training but hasn't been certified. DONA suggested that I do not discount them based on the not being certified when I was looking. Obviously you will meet your potential doula and check out her experience before hiring her.

We opted not to use a doula. I wasn't up for the fight with my husband over it. I really wish I had fought harder. I have a feeling my entire first labor would have been different.

  • Ours is free because she is not certified yet.  We will be one of the births she needs to attend for certification

In our area they run anywhere from about $250-$600.  It generally includes 1-2 prenatal visits, email communication back and forth as questions come up (they help make your birth plan which may also evolve over email), attendance for the birth and a postnatal visit

  • Thanks ladies!  I went to that website and emailed a few in my area.  Just out of curiousity, how are you finding ones that are apprentices or students still for such great prices/free?

This is exactly what we are getting and what we are paying. (plus an extra $200 for a birthing from within class...which is probably dumb because of the high chance of c-sec. with twins.)

We have interviewed 2 certified doulas so far. First one wanted 900 and the second 1350. Both include 2 prenatal visits, staying with you through the entire labor and one visit after birth.
