Small Dr vent about heartbeat

When we went to the doctor the other day we asked him what the heartbeat was, he said I don't really know, I would guess 148. But he really didn't count or anything. He said he would be able to tell if anything was wrong, it was still a little weird.

Re: Small Dr vent about heartbeat

  • Weird... my tech was like "165". I don't know if she got that out of a book or could really tell? She was printing a bunch of heartbeat waves so I would assume she really knew.... ?

  • What was he using to hear the heartbeat? Doppler? Stethoscope?  That sounds like pure laziness to me!  If he can hear the heartbeat he can look at a watch a count/time it!
  • That does seem a bit odd he wouldn't know the exact number... Hmm

  • oh my first appointment with an actual OB, she listened to the hb on the doppler, i said "Can you tell us the hb?" her response "anywhere between 150 and 160" i asked again "can you give us the exact number?" her: "anywhere between 150 and 160" UM LADY... what am i speaking latin over here?!

it is so frustrating! i just wanted to let you know you weren't alone.

  • My RE told me she's done so many u/s she can just listen for a few seconds and tell you within a few beats/minute. I'd assume that's what he did.

  • That sounds really odd.  Everytime I have gotten the heartbeat done with the doppler they show me the number right on the machine!

  • When I went for the check up, the doctor said it was about 150. If they have been in OB for a while, they prob have done it long enough they have a good idea.  The next week, I went for an U/S and the tech said it was 148. So the doc was pretty dang close.

Don't sweat it. I'm sure he/she knows what they are doing.

  • My first one was done on the ultrasound and it was around 170.  I have always been told the exact amount, but they haven't done the doppler yet.  I will find out tomorrow.
  • With my first she never gave us a number and with this one so far she hasnt either.  She said she doesnt belive it determines sex and as long as she hears what she is supposed to then everything is fine.  Kind of frustrating though bc the first thing people ask is "what was the hb?"  oh well Confused
  • I always have to ask my dr what the heartbeat is but I was told its right on the doppler so I don't feel like I'm "inconvencing" them in anyway.
  • We've had troubles finding the heartbeat, but she always tells us what it is.  She's even betting w/ my husband on the sex according to the rate.

  • At all of my appointment (3) so far at 17 wks....I've been shown the heartbeat number right off of the doppler device.

Also, my midwife said that as the baby develops the heartbeat slowly decreases.....fyi

How are you suppose to predict sex by the heartbeat number?

  • You can't predict the sex by the heartbeat. It's an old wives tale.  All my signs pointed to a boy with my first, but she is definately a girl!
