Motherhood Mat. annoys the bejeesus out of me

I went in on my lunch to pick up some shorts and I normally say I'm just browsing when I go in there because I hate how they hassle me and give me a million things to try on that I don't need.  Well, I made the mistake of telling the guy working there that I was looking for shorts when he asked me, so he starts going around pulling two pairs of every short they freaking carry in the store (except the ones that were on sale - go figure).  I literally could not stop him.  I kept saying, no I'm only looking for one pair of denim shorts, I don't want bermudas, etc. and he kept saying "well just try them, you never know!"

So I somehow ended up in a fitting room with like 20 items of clothing, including 6 or 7 tops even though I specifically told him I was not looking for any tops.  I was so annoyed that I only tried on one pair of shorts and left the fitting room because I was not going to pay $35 for shorts when there were other pairs on sale for $20.  Then another sales person tried to latch onto me by telling me I "needed" to try some tank tops because it's getting so hot out and I'd be sorry if I didn't.  I hate how overbearing the sales people are at that store!!!

  • I haven't had that problem yet. I'd be annoyed too. I just always say no thank you any time they ask. I go to them if I have a question. Its not like a library where you can't ever find what you're looking for....typicall everything is right out in the open. :-)

  • Agreed!  I have that same experience when I go in there.  I have a friend that used to work there, and she HATED it because they make you hound your customers for sales.
  • Wow, they don't do that at the one here. Maybe you need to shop online.

  • I'm scared to shop there exactly for this reason, and I'm bringing my SIL as backup to fend off the sales reps. I'm all for letting someone earn their commision, but if I tell you I'm shopping sales racks only, and just browsing, let me browse!

  • i worked at motherhood when i was in college as a summer job, and they actually train the sales people to do that and to try to up-sell. i never did because i didn't feel comfortable hassling people like that, but i have to laugh every time i read a post about how motherhood is so annoying w/ the hassling.
  • I totally agree.  The store is so small too... and I always end up being the only dang person in there, so people keep bothering me instead of just letting me look.
  • That definitely happened to me when I went and I haven't been back.

One time at a coach outlet, a sales woman would not leave me alone!  DH was so nice, and he told her he wanted to ask her about some other bag, and wasted her time til I found the bag I wanted lol!

  • Yikes! Pregnancy has brought out my hostile side, and I have found a good glare and stern "no" usually sends salespeople packing.
  • How annoying.  Thanks for the heads up I haven't been there yet.  Call me sexist, but why is man working in a maternity store?  That seems as bad as a man working at Victorias Secret.

  • The people at the one my my house aren't to bad. I went to another one though and they were kinda frightening.

YES!  I wasn't sure why, but it made me feel really uncomfortable.  He kept calling me honey and sweetie and he was YOUNGER THAN ME.  After that, I went from uncomfortable to just pissed off.

  • I think the sales people go through a special training. i have gone to two different stores and they will not leave me alone.  it drives me so so crazy.  i asked the lady to look up a tag i brought in cause i wanted a bigger size and she went and grabbed a different pair for me to try on.  i didn't like those and said, can i order this from the wharehouse and have it shipped to me.  she resisted untill i pushed and then did it..

  • Wow, I didn't have that problem at all at my Motherhood Mat. store. The two saleswomen were helpful when I needed their assistance, but not at all pushy. And their shorts prices were nowhere near $35! I think they were regularly $20 but they were on sale for $16.99 - cheaper than Target's shorts. But it was also an outlet store. Overall, though, I had a great experience there. Spent way too much money, but got some really cute mat. pieces that should carry me through the fall. I'd even wear a couple of them not pregnant. They just had some super cute styles.

I'm sorry you had such a bad experience.

  • I didn't have that experience, but it's been the same person the last two times I went in (and there only 3 total racks of plus-size clothes, so maybe that's why - there is nothing TO upsell.  I'm lucky if 5 items of clothing are in my size, lol).  Anyway, I apparently scared the woman, because she asked if I'd been in before and I said yes, but not since my last miscarriage.  And she's avoided me ever since.

  • That is the WORST thing about that store.  I went in there to buy a bathing suit and they tried to MAKE me try on the fake belly that they have in the dressing room.  And then proceeded to throw some bras in for me to try on.  What the heck?  They weren't even close to the size I wear either.

I have found that the MM outlets are not this way.  They carry the same stuff just have more sales.  You should try there if you have one close.

    Good luck!

  • I wont shop there again because of their CC abuse. I bought my DIL some clothes there, and they allowed my CC to be charged with $20 for the WPI Parenting Magazine. They are "suppose" to ask you if you would like two free issues, and then you can subscribe. But, I never oked any subscription to be charged to my account, and saw it a few weeks back on my statement. I had NO idea who it was, so I googled WPI PM, and saw nothing but complaints against MH and the magazine because of this practice! So, I called the number, and the lady told me it was a "glitch", and that I should not have been charged, and she would credit my account. That was June 11th, and it still has not been credited. I was not happy! So beware when using a CC there!
  • Yea, they have never been THAT pushy for me when I've went in there... But you'd be surprised how many stores, in general, do that. I used to work for The Limited and they seriously would get on you for NOT approaching the same customer at LEAST three times to open a card! I mean, seriously! That's just harassment!

  • I always get that when I go in. I try to go in really quickly and pretend I can't hear them!!
  • I'm so glad it's not just me. I won't go in there anymore because the salespeople are SO ANNOYING.  Like painfully agitating.  Give me a chance to just BROWSE for goodness sakes.  Last time I was there one salesperson kept offering me water.  Okay, nice gesture.  But I am pregnant!!  I already have enough problem with peeing every 15 minutes as is.

Are they commissioned?  Whatever they're doing in the training, they need to stop.  They're sales techniques rub me the wrong way.

  • I haven't had that problem at the one I go to.  There's a salesclerk in there that is a month ahead of me and I always work with her.  I was having trouble finding a dress for a wedding and she went around with me and helped me look until we found one.  She is great and I'll keep going back bc of her.

  • The exact same thing happened to me a couple weeks ago when I went into Motherhood. I was just snooping around, minding my own business, when this one girl started hounding me. Mind you, I worked retail for 8 years, so I'm quite polite to even pushy people. She was beyond pushy. After I told her several times that I was just looking, she almost forced me to try on a t-shirt. After a bit more hassle, I told her, "Why don't you try it on?". She looked at me blankly, searching for the right words. She came up with something about her big bust. That shut her up. HA! I haven't been back since.

  • Exactly the reason why I shop online :)

  • They do try to sell you everything there!

Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • They don't do that at mine.  In fact, I'm certain the employees are too busy having personal conversations with each other to even pay attention to shoppers!
  • Glad to see I'm not alone! You would think they would be a little less annoying since they deal with pregnant women everyday with crazy hormones. I stopped going in there for this very reason and shop at Kohls, oldnavy.com, or babies r us for my maternity clothes. And like you said, they are really expensive for even simple items. Ross has the best prices for maternity clothes although their selection is not all that big, but their shirts are really cute :)
  • whenever they stick you in the room with 100 outfits i alwyas just try on what i wanted to try on in the first place and pretend like i tried the rest. Its not like i want to be rude but im not here to buy out the store either..

  • I hate any store where the sale clerks instantly pounce on you the moment that you walk in a store... and never around when you need help with something.

  • I actually worked there as a District Manager for 2 years and yes, I know  as a customer, how annoying some sales associates can be.  I must say though that all the stores get secret shopped and have a 3 page guideline on certain questions to ask each customer and adding on in the fitting rooms is one.  I'm not making excuses by all means because I felt bad "pushing" customers too but on the other hand, you get in trouble for a low score.
  • I had this experience at Pea in the Pod (more $$$ designer version of MM). I told the salesgirl outright that I could NOT afford anything there that wasn't really marked down. She apologized and confessed that they're told they have to bring every customer 30 additional items while they're in the dressing room. THIRTY! I felt bad for her, but still... I won't shop there again because of it. I bought a dress that I found (w/ OUT anyone's help) on the sale rack and left.
  • I would check and see if there is another one in your area because I don't have that problem but that would drive me crazy also.
  • That sounds really annoying but really you can pick up your own stuff, like the shorts on sale, and just tried on what you wanted.  You gets to leave all that stuff you don't want right there in the dressing room for the sales associate to put away.

  • The sales people at my store aren't like that, so that isn't my problem I have with them.  My problem is there return policy (they don't really have one!) and the fact that you pay a lot of money for them and they don't hold up as well as other clothes - they sometimes get stringy and are more expensive - especially considering you can't wear them other than when you are pregnant!
  • Wow, that is annoying, thank goodness they haven't done that to me yet!
  • I actually had that same experience when I went there and I ended up spending over $100 on to me seems like i got nothing.. Right when I walked in I was hounded.. I felt very uncomfortable when I was there .. I dont know where you live and if you have a kmart near you but, I went to a kmart last week and I got great shorts and capris there for $15 and I love them.. I cant get myself to pay $40 for a pair of maternity shorts.. I just go to different retail stores that carry maternity clothes
  • This happened to me at 2 of the 3 different Motherhood stores I've been to. The first time I went in cause my pants just weren't fitting right and I wanted to see what they had. The saleswoman brought me 4 different types of pants, all in the wrong size. After 30 minutes I found a pair in my size that I picked out. The other 2 stores I didn't buy anything cause of the prices.

Last night I went to Ross looking for a comfy dress and found out they carried maternity clothes and in my size. I walked out with denim shorts and capris, both which fit, and both I found on my own in a matter of minutes oh and they were only $10 each. I shop fast when given the opportunity. I'll be heading back to ross first from now on.

  • I agree! DH and I went in there looking for capris and the woman kept insisting on the most expensive ones. I eventually just told her no and that the the sale ones were just what I was looking for. DH worked retail at the times as a sales person and he was disgusted by how pushy and rude the woman was.
  • Been there, done that. Now I shop at Target, Old Navy, and JCPenney for maternity clothes. They have WAY better sales, and no annoying sales people:)
  • I agree!  Anyone know how to give them a link to all the negative postings on here so they can get a clue?  My Motherhood store is so annoying, I go in with my iPod on so they get the hint.  Or, talk on my cell phone while shopping.  As rude as I think that usually is in other stores, I resort to it in there....  Aahhhh!!  I feel your pain.
  • As a woman working in retail (Victoria's Secret), can I just please ask you to be kind to salespeople unless they do something rude? There are certain guidelines we have to follow or risk losing a job or hours, and as annoying as it can be, most of us will do what we have to in order to keep working. There's nothing worse than leaving my job at the end of the day after being treated like something other's walk on.
