So my parents are coming today to stay for a week or so. They use dryer sheets on all their laundry (sometimes 2 a load!!) and will insist upon using them while here, I'm sure. How can I explain to them that we don't use dryer sheets and they cause CDs to repel b/c they coat the dryer while being nice and respectful? My mom takes everything I say (just about) as rude or whatever. But I have a brand new dryer/washer and don't want them full of fabric softener when we use vinegar.
Also, my towels arent' coming out too soft anymore. What can I do to get them softer? Do the plastic dryer balls work for that? I'd like something I can pick up today if possible.

I would just say that the smell of the fabric softener makes you feel nauseous. And if that doesn't work, let your mom know that your dryer is brand new and you don't want to have any future issues with your laundry including your diapers which were an investment that you'd like to use for baby #2 as well.
And the plastic dryer balls do work for laundry including towels. They're just not eco-friendly. But, also have those on hand for your mom to use for laundry and just tell her to give it a try with those before she ruins your dryer. Plus, they are money saving in the long run. I have them and have one years life left in mine before I make the complete switch to wool.
hahahahaha
Your house, your rules. If they don't like it, they can go to a laundromat.
Being firm but polite should work, if it doesn't, confiscate any dryer sheets you find!
Offer to do her laundry and then just don't use them. Use vinegar and dryer balls and then ask her if she can tell the difference! That is what I would do but I'm sneaky... And my mom would never relent on stuff like that.
She tried to give me all these crazy harsh cleaning supplies when we moved into our apartment last winter. I kept refusing and said I liked to make my own or buy the most natural products I could find. Her response was, I kid you not, "Oh, I guess you don't like your house to be really clean"... I just looked at her and was like "That was very rude!" and she laughed.
