Do I have this right?

I'm comparing all of the CDs available and my head is spinning.....We want to buy a few each month so we can cut down on the big cost. Please tell me if I have this right:

Romparooz or BG3 are all in ones...the bonus is you only have to buy 24-36 and call it day since they are one size fits all. The downside: expensive!

Using pre folds and a diaper cover, you have to buy tons of different sizes. 24 small, 24 medium, etc?

Re: Do I have this right?

  • Try to remember that you can use cloth for more then one baby and/or sell them to buy the next size up.

  • RaR are pockets which means you stuff an insert into the pocket so technically it is 2 pieces but still quite simple.  BG come in pockets or AIO's depending on which style you choose.  The only caveat with OS dipes is that most babies don't fit into them from birth - they usually start fitting well around 10-12lbs depending on the build of you LO.

Prefolds you can really get buy with 2-3 sizes if you're willing to fold down a bit.  Technically you could probably even do one but boy would that be bulky on a newborn!  EFF's really love Green Mountian Diapers which sells more sizes of prefolds which is really nice but not necessary if you're CDing to save money.

We definitely are planning to use them for more than one baby! We consider it an investment, just trying to figure out which to invest in.

Totally this!  I bought my NB dipes, sold those to pay for smalls, sold those to pay for mediums, etc...  It's a bit of work, but keeps the investment small and now it feels like I'm getting the new dipes for free!  I also highly recommend buying used - you save a lot of money and it's more EF!

  • i did the same as Lotte. i'v also bought a few odd ones here and there. it helped me find which ones i like best.  i originally thought i'd like the one-size diapers.  i actually prefer the sized diapers. (less bulk).  i ahve a few different brands i like too.  i'm just starting to feel the love for fitted diapers.
  • Monkey - I bought 24 prefolds in the infant size and a few thirsties covers.  I received some fitteds as gifts (there are more expensive than prefolds, but easier for grandparents and DH to use) in x-small and small to also use with the thirsties covers.  It was really cheap to buy these locally.

Once we are out of the newborn stage and Lillian can fit into one-size diapers we are going to use BG diapers and probably a variety of other one-size diapers to see which ones work best for us.  If you like BG, there is a discount on packages at www.cottonbabies.com , if you sign up for their newsletter, you can get an additional 5% off that, and free shipping. We'll probably go with Organic BG with snaps, and buy some BG pockets for night time use (or a more absorbant pocket diaper like Blueberries).

Sare, thank you so much. I think we may do something similar now that I'm getting deeper into things. Although I'm fullly expecting a 9lb baby so we're going to just use sposies until the stump falls off then use the small prefolds and thirsties.

I think I'm going to be a few AIOs to try out until we figure out what we really like.

  • Honestly...the VERY best advice I can possible give you is to get a trial (like the one that Jillians offers) to see what you like before you buy anything!  You could sink all your $$ into pockets but then end up hating them and then possible give up on Cding when in reality it's just the wrong diapering system for you.
