Omnivore's Dilemma/Food Inc?

Anyone read Omnivore's Dilemma or seen Food Inc?  I can't wait to see Food Inc, it was in town this weekend, but I'm not sure if it's still playing or not.

I just finally picked up Omnivore's Dilemma (I know it's been out for a few years, but a friend just recommended it to me), when we were in the mountains this weekend, and LOVE it.  I just need more time to read (and to not feel like I'm dying with a variety of ailments right now).

Anyway, just after reading the first chapter of the book, DH and I are already talking about it to everyone.  I told him people already thought we were food crazy, now what will they think?  LOL.

I haven't read/seen those, but I did read Plenty and Fast Food Nation and both are awesome. :-)

We're food crazy, too, but people have learned that when we say "it's *so* good" that we actually mean it - and they appreciate that.

  • I read Fast Food Nation too (I was pregnant with #1 at the time, and it was very hard to stomach the slaughterhouse parts, ew).

I think our family appreciates it, I fear that they think we're being critical of what they eat.  We're just trying to educate them about what we're learning b/c we find it so interesting.

I hope to be able to take my class to see Food Inc... I teach pastry at a local college and so many of my students have never even come close to a growing vegetable, let alone thought about where their food comes from.

DH and I are trying to raise our 2 kids to be aware of things like this even though we live in an apartment  -- we spent Earth Day weekend at a farm planting potatoes and herding the sheep from thier winter quarters to the pasture for the spring.

  • i read it last year and thought it was fascinating.  DH could care less!  I just got back from an Ag conference and had lots of people to discuss it with...so nice!

I'm reading it right now, too! I just finished the first "section" and absolutely love it. I'm the same way with sharing what I've learned in it with others, its far too interesting to not! I picked up "In Defense of Food" to read when I'm done with "Omnivores Dilemma." I can't wait!

  • I saw Food Inc. 2 months ago and it's incredible.  Here and here are a couple good articles I just happened to read earlier today.  I could go on and on even two months later -- it's truly excellent.

I saw Food Inc. yesterday, and it was really good (I posted about it).  I love Michael Pollan and love how much airtime he always gets.  I don't know how much overall impact all of this will have, I just have to wishfully think that eventually most Americans will come around (and our government and the industrial food machine).
