Vaccines

I am surprised at how many vaccines there are now than before. Like I learned from my father. I am researching all of them before deciding which ones will be apporerate for my child.

Vaccination... thoughts?

Re: Vaccines

  • This is a personal decision for each family.

My child will be getting all recommended vaccinations, "on schedule".

    This.

  • I am reading Dr. Sears book "The Vaccine Book".  It is very informative giving all the info about each vaccine, in detail.  He also offers an alternative schedule.

I am normally a don't rock the boat kind of person, but I am seriously considering the alternative schedule.  I can't really see why not.

Before I was pregnant, the issue would come up, and I always thought, I am fine and I got vaccines.  But things have changed since then, and the vaccines contain a lot more ingrediance than before.

It is obviously a personal choice, but I suggest reading the book.  If nothing more, you will at least be informed about what you are putting in your baby's body and what it prevents.

  • I second reading the Sears vaccine book.  I have an extensive library on the subject and his is the most neutral and lay-person- friendly.

It is a personal subject, and it is important to have a pediatrician who supports you as a mother to do what you believe os best for your child.  DH and I are pro-vaccine but do not agree with the aggressive schedule.  With DD, we found if we do one shot at a time, she did fine.  If she had more than one, she regressed in eating (and my skinny mini couldn't afford that!), sleeping, behavior... She developed fevers and was extremely irritable for 3-5 days.  With one shot at a time, she does great, so that influenced our decision.  FOr the twins, we will try 2 at a time and see how they respond.

Because we are responsible parents and see to it that she does get all her shots (a few like rotovirus and flu we skipped, others, like Hep B we are delaying until just before school)), and bring her in b/t well visits to get a shot, and are well versed on the subjec-t and not in a Jenny McCArthy fanatic way- the pediatrician is supportive.  Good luck with your research and decision!

  • We have decided to delay all vaccinations until closer to school and then we will not give all of them. ?I see no need for the flu, chickenpox, or a few of the others. Also, we are giving some individually. ?Such as tetanus, DS will be getting soon and by itself not in the "cocktail". ?

We are both medically trained, intelligent people and did a TON of research, we still have had trouble with doctors. ?It is not easy to find one who is supportive of an alternative schedule. ?So do your research, feel well informed, and then you will be able to discuss things with your pediatrician.?

I do recommend Dr. Sears Vaccination book. ?Lots of good info.

Bottom line, you have to feel comfortable with your decision, whatever way you choose, don't worry about what everyone else thinks. ?Someone always has an opinion.?

  • I work in the healthcare field as an RN so my child will be getting all vaccinations asap.  But it's really a personal decision.

  • Are you taking your child to day care? If you are then you may not have a choice of when you have your LO get the vaccines. They may require them (some of them) before you take start taking your LO there.

  • DD has been getting most of the vaccines on a spaced out schedule. No more then 2-3 at a time (per her first pedi's suggestion that more then that was a lot on their little systems. I agreed with that and have read a few book on it).

We decided to opt out of the chicken pox vaccine until DD is older, and the rotavirus one since it's so new (DD's first pedi didn't even offer it).

  • im going with whatever they recommend, when they recommend it.
  • I worked in the medical field before staying at home with my child, and am a strong advocate of vaccinations.  My child will be getting them on schedule - why have her exposed any longer than she needs to?

Also every daycare and preschool (public and private) in my area requires flu, chickenpox and pneumococcal vaccinations (in addition to the others like MMR and polio, etc).  So even if you want to avoid certain vaccinations, you may find yourself really limited in terms of where you can send your child for care or schooling by doing so, depending on your state.

  • i am a nurse and by boyfriend is a paramedic. we choose to do single vaccinations instead of mixed. I know there is no evidence to prove autism with mixed vaccinations but for us we feel more comfortable having single vaccinations that mixed vaccinations.
  • I personally had a very severe allergic reaction to a vaccine when I was younger. I am actually legally, medically exempt from all vaccinations. (This includes my job at an Army base in the summer months). My child will be receiving vaccinations that are on an alternate/delayed schedule, and will also never receive a group shot- all will be administered individually. Just my decision- one that had DH frustrated and annoyed with, but he wasn't there when it happened to me.... I would never want to see my child go through that and he/she is more likely to have complications according to my Dr. (I was even offered an exemption for my future children).
