2nd Trimester

I am starting weight watchers tomorrow.

I thought that I had only gained 9 pounds, but I weighed myself again today and I am up about 13 lbs!!! I know that this is about where I should be but I was over weight to begin with. I was 128 lbs on my wedding day and I gained 30 lbs this past year ( I lost my job and got really depressed for a while). I found another great job, went on a strict diet and doing really well when I got pregnant and so I pretty much just started eating what I want. I am up to 172lbs! At the rate I am going I am going to be 200lbs by the time I give birth. There is no way I am going to let that happen.

I know. boooooo to weight posts. But I am so so so upset about my body. I look like shamu, or a big lumpy heap of ricotta cheese. Seeing Mrs Foreste and Waterfairy's pictures make me feel even worse about myself. I know its not good to compare yourself to other people, but it is hard not to.

Re: I am starting weight watchers tomorrow.

  • I feel your pain....I gained alot of weight after my wedding due to a thyroid disorder, then I got pregnant and now I just feel like a whale!

Just FYI though, if you plan to go to WW meetings, I am not sure they will allow you to attend/sign up if they know you are pregnant. And if you do it online or on your own, you may want to add a couple points on top of your daily points to allow enough nutrition for the baby. I know I will be starting WW again immediately after the baby comes!

  • I understand your concern about weight gain, however I would strongly suggest talking to your doctor before joining WW (if you're serious about doing that).
  • I'm also 172 lbs don't worry about gaining weight! its soooo not a big deal while your pregnant! I am not worrying about being 200+lbs when I deliver. Its still being 200+lbs months after I give birth!

  • WW has a pregnancy plan you get to eat more than normal WW people. But helps you not over eat! I am not currently on WW and if i remember correctly you may need a Drs note if Pregnant but its not Unhealthy for Pregnant women! I lost 32lbs on WW in highschool, Gained most of it back but I still have really good habits that I learned from it!
  • Oh, please.  I had put on 13 pounds by the end of the first tri for gods sake.  I'm only a week ahead of you and I've put on at least ten pounds more than you.  I am nearing the 200 mark as we speak and will most certainly go over it before this baby comes.  Big deal.  I eat healthy and exercise, and my doc is not concerned...that's all I need to know.  You are right on track for weight gain so you should not be complaining at all.  Being pregnant means gaining weight...you knew that when you signed up.

And WW will not let you join if you are pregnant.  Some doctors may make exceptions for morbidly obese pregnant women, but it doesn't sound like you fall even remotely in that category whatsoever.  Just eat healthy choices and get your daily exercise in.  You are FINE.

  • I've done WW several times when my weight has gotten out of hand and it is a fantastic program. I know here they will not allow you to join or weigh-in if you are pregnant, but that doesn't mean you can't sign up for a free profile on their website to post in the forums about any tips to healthy eating.

Ultimately I would think Dr's would also not recommend joining whilst pregnant because it decreases your calorie intake and that's not usually something you need to do when incubating. :-P

The best thing you can do to keep your weight in check is to drink lots of water (at least 6 8oz. glasses/day), keep up with your 5-a-day veggies, and keep plenty of fibre in your diet.

I had to take a leave from WW as soon as they discovered I was pregnant, but since I have kept all my info, I follow the basics of the plan as best I can and I haven't gained more than 1lb so far. I don't journal anymore, but I just keep a loose mental list. I'm only early into the 2nd tri (15 weeks) and I expect that I WILL be gaining some weight...but I want to make sure I keep it under control and don't go overboard.

    Good luck though.

ETA: When I found out I was pregnant, I still had 3 stone left to lose on WW (so roughly 45-50 lbs left to lose). Needless to say, I started with extra weight.

  • I know a lot of people are concerned about weight, but you're pregnant, you will gain weight.  I got married October 2006 and have since gained a whopping 40 pounds!  My excuse, well, there is none, DH and I gained a lot of weight.  I'm def starting off overweight, but I'm okay with it.  As long as I know my baby is healthy and I'm trying to eat right, it's not a big deal.

Take some deep breaths, watch what you eat and enjoy being pregnant.

  • I usually take the flamethrower to posts like this but I'm groggy from just waking up.

I've gained about 30lbs overall and I'm up there now and it sucks.

But you know what, my blood pressure is low, I have a happy, healthy baby on the way and I walk every day (except for the last two thanks to teeming rain storms.

    The walking helps.

No sweets or fruit or white starchy foods past 5pm.

Breast feeding is the plan and lots more walking post baby.?

  • Oh FFS. You are pregnant. You are supposed to be gaining weight. You have a poor body image - and that will be a problem no matter what your weight is. Get a counselor and start talking to them, this will help you to be comfortable with your body at any weight.

Put away the damn scale and talk to your Dr. Put your big girl panties on and realize that you are going to be a Mom soon, and this kind of selfish BS will not fly with a little one to take care of.

  • There is no reason to join weight watchers when you are pregnant. You have not gained over the recommended weight gain. You know what you need to do. Stop eating whatever you want and get your butt out there to exercise. Don't buy junk food, no drive-thru stops, and don't use the pregnancy as an excuse to eat whatever you want. Think about eating only what you would feed you're newborn but please do not try and loose weight! You do not need weight watchers for that.

Oh lord. While dumb, that likely was not the cause.

  • Just start eating healthy and walking or exercising lightly. You are pregnant and you ARE going to gain weight. There is absolutely nothing that you can do about it! I know it can be hard to see your body change but you can't start dieting. You can eat healthy but do not diet! I gained a lot with DS. To be honest...I don't even know how much because I stopped looking at the number on the scale. I told my Dr. to tell me when she was concerned and I stopped worrying about it. It was a relief to stop watching that # climb up. I know I hit the 200 mark or right around there. I am tall but that is still high for me. You know what...I lost it ALL after having DS and then some. And, I did absolutely nothing but BF and walk occasionally with the stroller. The pic below is my siggy is me in a bikini when DS is 7 months old. Enjoy your pregnancy and worry about getting into shape after :)

I second this.  I'm at around the same weight range too.  I've always been tall (5'10") but I was not as thin as I wanted to be before I got pregnant, I get compliments all the time on how good I look pregnant.  I had surgery a while before getting pregnant and gained weight afterwards and never took it completely off.  I decided to get pregnant though knowing I would be gaining more weight.  Who gives a crap if you gain more weight, you are supposed to!  Don't be so hard on yourself, it sounds like you'll have no problem losing the weight after the baby is born if you keep the attitude you have.  Plus, try substituting some of the empty calories with more healthy foods like fruits, veggies and lean meats.

Usually those things are caused by these pesky little things called genes.

Red, I'll pick up that flame thrower for you.  To the OP, if you wanted to be a size 2 then you never should have gotten pregnant.  Maybe no one told you, but you are actually SUPPOSED to gain weight while PG.

While I understand not wanting to gain too much weight, I think that this is something that you discuss with your doctor instead of taking matters into your own hands.

  • jshfjshf member

I think that it's good that you're trying to be healthy and take care of yourself now.  Some people just let themselves go because they are pregnant and gain too much weight.  I think weight is a serious issue because you can develop all sorts of problems like diabetes and hypertension.  And the more weight you gain during pregnancy, the more you have to take off and lots of people never lose the weight.

That said, it should be done in a healthful way.  WW is good in that it gives you support and helps you be mindful of what you are eating.  I probably would not eat their frozen meals often, or just frozen foods in general as they tend to have too much sodium.

The diet that I follow is the South Beach Diet.  I lost over 40 lbs with it over 5 years ago and it has helped me to keep the weight off because it focuses on eating whole foods, lots of vegies/fruit, and lean meats.  I also avoid processed carbs as much as possible.  If I do eat carbs, it's usually whole grains.

Diets never worked for me because I am a big eater and I enjoy food ALOT.  But now that I fill up on healthy foods, I don't overeat on junk and manage my weight well.  I think the South Beach Diet allows you to eat enough food and nutrition for your baby.  It's not so much about calorie restriction as eating well.  I am also horrible with keeping points and that kind of thing so it works well for me.

Here is a sample of what I eat throughout the day.

Vegie omelette with a little cheese, maybe an ounce.

Peanut butter and jelly sandwich on whole grain bread as a snack

For lunch, Vegie wrap with avocado, an ounce of cheese,  humus.  I use Smart Wraps that only have 90 calories and 7 grams of fiber.

An apple and a piece of string cheese, or a small bowl of blueberries and cottage cheese as another snack.

For dinner I will eat chicken or fish with grilled or stirfried vegies.  I also make lots of soups.  I put a lot of meat and vegies in the soups, so it's almost like a stew.

If I have a sweet craving, I eat those chocolate pudding pops that have only 40 calories.  It's better than other sweets for me because it's frozen and lasts longer.  If I eat a cookie or piece of chocolate.  They're gone in seconds, so my craving isn't totally satisfied.

As you can see, it's a lot of food!  But I usually combine vegies/fruit with protein and it is very filling and I don't miss the carbs.  So far I've only gained about 10-12 lbs.

Sorry for the long post! Good luck!

Are you seriously trying to convince the OP to start the SBD? Are you a doctor? Or a nutritionist? If not, then you have NO right to give her ridiculous, unsafe advice.

You actually said,  "I think the South Beach Diet allows you to eat enough food and nutrition for your baby." So you don't know for sure. Don't you think the OP should talk to her doctor first, rather than taking the advice of someone that THINKS she knows what the hell she's talking about?

When you're pregnant, you should NEVER start a diet program, particularly one that completely restricts an entire food group. Yes, it's important to stick to whole grains and such, but you don't need a restrictive diet to do that. Keep your diet "advice" to yourself from now on.

  • I know gaining can be tough especially is you have struggled with weight.  But just talk to your Dr about it or maybe see a nutritionist who can help you eat healthy for you and baby.  Also get up and Move.  Exercise is great during pregnancy.  After the baby you can join WW and serious diet.  Right now you need to accept you are going to have to gain weight not over doing it though.  Dont beat yourself up or compare yourself to others.

Eat well, work out and stay healthy for you and your baby.

MrsForeste and Waterfairy are both naturally small people.  That would be like me saying I want to look like Kelly Ripa after I have Henry...it's not going to happen.  People have different frames and no amount of dieting will make you a small framed person if you aren't one.

  • I agree with the multitudes--healthy eating, not dieting, is the way to go.  I signed up on babyfit to track my calories and nutrients (it helps me see how eating junk can sabotage myself), and I'll be starting water aerobics now that school is over.  Yeah, I started with a bit of extra weight that I wish I didn't have, but now my body is programmed to hold on to fat to help with breastfeeding, so staying healthy and not expecting to lose fat is all I can do (though if I do lose some fat, bonus!).

I wasn't suggesting anyone pregnant go on a diet to lose weight.  The word diet is really just what your eating, not necessarily a weight loss plan.  I do believe that when you are pregnant, just as in all times in your life, you should make healthy choices as too much weight gain can lead to all kinds of medical problems.  I was recommending South Beach as an alternative to WW, because it is not really about calorie restriction, but about eating healthfully and making good choices.  You lose weight because you are eating whole foods rather than processed foods.

I'm sure most people know that you should just eat well and exercise.  But if we all did what we "knew", then none of us would struggle with weight.  I'm sorry if it came across as my suggesting to her or to anyone to diet in order to lose weight while pregnant.  I just know how difficult it is for people and many of my clients, including myself have found the South Beach Diet a good resource in terms of making healthy choices.
