Thanks for asking.  Not great.  She's back in the hospital.  They had her on magnesium sulfate and it made her really sick.  She said it's like having all the bad side effects of being drunk and none of the good.  It did however stop her contractions.  As they have taken her off of it, her contractions have come back.  They can't leave her on it because it makes the baby's heart rate drop.  She is dilating some but her cervix is shortening. It is half as long as it was 3 days ago. So, for now she is stuck in the hospital.

She's caught in the middle of a battle among perinatologists. One half of the group, says do nothing. NICU care is so good just deliver whenever. The other part (her doctor) says try and keep them pregnant as long as possible.  At this point, they will continue with meds until 34 weeks and decide how much further they can push her body. It's really hard though. Our family has horrible GI issues (especially with our children). Any amount of prematurity is likely to compound that.  DS has pretty bad reflux but my niece was so severely FTT that she had multiple surgeries and a g-button for almost 3 years.  She weighed 12 lbs on her 1st bday.  She was born at 37 weeks.  So, we'll see.  Sorry this got really long! Thanks again for asking!

  • I'm really sorry to hear that. It has to be so frustrating when the doctors aren't all on the same page. It just has to make you worry. Hopefully they'll all agree on a course of action soon. I would say that the NICU care is incredible, so regardless of when she delivers the baby is likely to be ok. The only thing that would worry me would be the GI issues you're describing. However I wonder if the magnesium could also complicate that. I am so sorry that you guys are in this situation. That's just really hard. How are her other kids doing? I know you said her daughter was being really clingy. Are they handling this ok? That has to be scary for them to see mom so sick. I'll say a prayer that she delivers that baby as soon as is healthy and safe for everyone! Let me know if you ever need to vent to someone who is removed from the situation.
