2nd Trimester

Would you use a used crib mattress?

Normally, I am not too picky about hand-me-down stuff, I can sterilize most stuff, and the baby is only going to use it for a short amount of time.  But to me, a used mattress is a different story.  A good friend offered us hers, which was sweet but I mean, they spit up, their diapers leak, and no amount of cleaning is going to get anything inside the mattress cleaned.  My DH doesnt seem to mind the idea of a used mattress, but says if thats how I feel thats fine and we will get a new one.

Am I being overly cautious, or would you agree that mattresses arent quite the same as a used Bumpo?

Depends - is it a water proof mattress?  Are there any rips on it?  Is it sagging?    If it's water proof (vinyl or something like that outer cover) then it can be cleaned just as good as a bumbo.  If it's not, well I wouldn't use it either.
  • You are never supposed to use a used mattress. They are implicated in SIDS. You are not even supposed to re-use one for a second child. We're buying a new one for this baby even though DS's is in good shape.

  • Honestly, it would depend.  How long was theirs used for?  Only having used 1 for a month is different then 2yr.  Did they have a mattress protector pad on it?  Did they use anything else on top of the crib mattress sheet (like a sheet saver)?  Is it in good condition (no rips, no sagging, etc.)?  Do they know the warranty on their mattress?

Really, none of the issues you mentioned are big deals especially if they used a mattress protector pad underneath the crib sheet.

And you can always use a mattress protector pad.  Really, you should use them on every bed in your house to make all mattresses last longer, be stain free, etc.

  • No no on the used mattress. ?I am buying a new one for this baby. You can get a good one for 100 bucks plus they can be used on toddler beds. ?So you can use it for 3 or 4 years depending on the size of the child.

  • I have a used mattress for DS.  It is waterproof (plastic), I knew the previous owner (used it for 1 yr with 1 child) and she always used a waterproof mattress pad, just like I do.  I had planned to buy one, but this one was free.
  • I said absolutely NO to a few things WRT having something used. They were the crib, mattress, car seat and stroller. It's important to me and DH that those things are the newest possible, just our preference. I'm sure they're all fine to have used, but I wouldn't want to take the chance on finding out.
