2nd Trimester

dying hair?

is anyone dying their hair while pregnant? before i was pregnant I was an avid hair dyer since i was a teen. Ive been a red head ever since DH knew me and I stopped dying my hair when I found out that I was pregnant in january. I tried henna hair dye but its too stinky and time consuming. I had these 2 boxes of hair dye that has been haunting me under my sink for months. after looking at my two toned, brown hair in the mirror this morning i decided to go for it and but the dye in my hair. I love the way i feel after a fresh dye, my hair feels great and I feel sexy lol. now im waiting for my hair to process and im starting to feel guilty for not holding out on dying my hair for another 3 months. is anyone else dying their hair?

Re: dying hair?

  • I haven't and my "silver highlights" are taking over.

I was told that highlights/lowlights were ok as long as I didn't ingest the solution.  not sure about a full dye job though...

  • I'm not dying mine, although I'm DYING to (haha, like the pun??) I'm waiting just because part of me worries about it a little, and the other part of me is just too lazy! I think you should be fine though. I wouldn't worry :)
  • I dyed mine . I got it done at a salon that used pneumonia-free hair products, so there was no odor at all it was great !!!

  • I had mine highlighted before I went to the beach.  My doctor actually complimented me on it, so I am assuming she didn't have a problem with it.  I don't think I will actually do a full hair dye though until after he is born.  That's going to be my gift to myself after he is born!
  • I had mine highlighted at 9 weeks I think. I asked the dr and she said it was fine.
  • I've been doing it and I don't think its a problem at all.  They make dyes so mild these days that it poses no danger.
  • Nope its mainly a big no no in 1st tri, most critical period. ?But this is the problem. ?Hormones change your hair so it may not reach the same color during pregnancy and my doctor said if you can avoid it do. ?I love dying my hair because of the way it feels etc. ?I am just going to wait and do it like a month or so after. ?Or maybe there are some natural dyes that dont have chemicals. ?Good luck.

Both my brother and sister are hairdressers and I have dyed mine.  My brother researched it first and wouldn't touch me till my second trimester and he made it a color that was really close to my natural  haircolor.  It's growing out really nicely without any horrible roots.  He said he will only do it 1 more time while I am pregnant though.  I may have to sneak to my sister then lol.  jk

  • I promised myself I wasn't going to, even though the risks aren't scientifically proven.  But after 14 weeks, I feel so blah, I may have to give in and do something.  Maybe highlights, instead of the dark brown I was doing.

  • I held off through almost the end of the 1st trimester but what are you supposed to do when your roots are getting very noticeable and you feel self-conscious...? I went with a full head dye and didn't feel guilty about it.  I go again in July for full dye and highlights, when I'll be about 18 weeks.

My CNM says that it's fine to dye your hair, just don't do it every day.

  • I dyed and highlighted mine.  I had a pro do it so that it would last longer than the boxes usually do (I have hot roots which means hair color fades from my hair really fast).  She did a great job.  Most of my friends have dyed their hair while preg too.
  • Finally highlited mine about 2 weeks ago. Doctor said it was perfectly fine so I didn't worry and I felt like a new person without my ugly roots growing out :-)
