I don't know - like 10 months? We don't have a backyard. I didn't take her to a park that was famous for having a bunch of IV drug users and/or cats or anything like that. And I gave the sand a once over before letting her in there. But she digs the sand and playing around like that so ::: shrugs ::: even in the privacy of our condo she licks cats, attempts to eat dirt from pot plants, and goes for the garbage can. When we're out in public she goes out of her way to nom shopping carts and be alarmingly not afraid of strangers. So digging around in sand doesn't phase me anymore, kwim?
Whenever we go to the beach he tries to eat fistfuls of sand, so yeah that's a definite no. ?I don't know when they stop putting things in their mouth though, like year and a half? ?Two???

A secret growing operation you'd like to share with the group, Larks?
And Joseph would have played with sand earlier than he did if it hadn't been winter. His first time was in April, so he was 14m. He has his own, but he's also played at the park.
I've been looking for but never found (a public) one for the last 2mos so I guess I would've been cool with it 10-11mos? Oh well, we're moving and will have a backyard finally so I'll hook her up next month!! I can't wait. The child has a keen sense of taste and will often lick things first (brocolli be damned for it) before chewing so I have confidence sand won't go over well
Re: When would you (or have you) let DC play in a sand box?
When he's old enough to not eat it!
