Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

I'm so confused...

I had RPL testing done about a month after my D&E and there were a few issues that were found from the testing. One of the issues was Protein C deficiancy, so I went to a hematologist to see what it meant. She tested my Protein C again which would have been about 2 months after the D&E and it was normal (no deficiancy). Before she received the results from the test she ran she told us we would most likely need to be on Lovenox during pg, but when I talked to her today she thought it might have shown as deficiant since there was still pg hormones in my system. If this might only be pg related, wouldn't I still need to be on Lovenox??

  • I'm in a similar boat. With my first pg, they found a Protein S deficiency when I was 5 months or so along, and put me on lovenox for the rest of the pg. DS was born healthy. They tested me after the pg and everything came back normal. They said I needed to be followed next time, but there was no plan to put me on lovenox right away.

Then I had two m/c. So I'm getting the testing done again, but my OB has said he will likely put me on the lovenox as soon as I have a BFP.

I don't really understand it either, though the drs I talked to first time around did seem to say that if the deficiency was pg related, I wouldn't need the lovenox. But since I'v had two losses, I wonder.

Protein function in the clotting cascade (protein c being one of them) often changes during pregnancy, and this is normal. As a result, findings from blood of a pregnant woman are not reliable to detect a true protein c deficiency. There are too many false positives.

I had a blood clot about 2 years ago. My tests for protein c deficiency came back inconclusive (though they believed I was probably not deficient). I was told at that time that on the off chance I was deficient, that I would be put on lovenox during pregnancy; it was suggested that I get tested again in 6 months to confirm that I was not deficient (so that I could avoid the lovenox shots during pregnancy).

Well, I got pregnant before I got around to getting the test :-(. I called the doctor immediately to schedule the test. I was told that it was useless to have the test done because pregnant women often test positive for protein c deficiency, even though they are not. They said that they would just have to treat me with lovenox throughout my pregnancy to be safe.

So, what your doctor meant was that your positive test result was pregnancy-associated--not that you actually had protein-c deficiency during pregnancy.

    Hope that helps.
