Poll- what temp do you set your A/C at in the house?

I saw this on 6-12 Months. I want to know if I'm just crazy and have it set high or if there's a difference on the EFF forum.

What temperature do you set for A/C for the house??

Daytime: 80
Nighttime: 75

(It's not very humid here, so maybe that's why we can get away with high temps. Plus, 80 is bound to feel cool compared to 100 outside I guess.)

  • We only use our's for daytime sleeping (window unit) or we roll out the portable for company & super miserable days (high humidity here).

    We set our's at 68 or 70.

  • until today, i had it at 76 during the day.  today i turned it down to 74.
  • Ok - I guess I'm crazy! :)
  • Summer schedule:

    between 8:30am-8pm, it's at 77

    between 8pm and 10pm it's at 75

    between 11:30pm and 8:30am it's at 72

DH wouldn't mind if it were cooler, I wouldn't mind if it were warmer.

  • when I lived in AZ I kept it at least 75, usually a little closer to 80.  I don't like being cold, so as long as it was reasonably cool inside I was fine.

(I was also always really concerned about the cost of keeping the place cool, so that may have a lot to do with it too).

  • Today I turned the heat back on because it was chilly.  I have yet to turn the AC on and hopefully can make it all summer without turning it on since DH isnt here and up to about 88 or so is still cool to me.
  • I don't know - we rarely have to use it - we have a window unit from when we lived in Illinois, but we've used it a handful of times here (mostly for nighttime when the daytime heat just hangs over you).  I don't know what we set it at, maybe 72-76?

  • i think it definitely has a lot to do w/ humidity.
  • We haven't used ours much this year... the few times we've turned it on has been about 74 or so because it was over 90 outside. We just have a little box fan to keep the air moving otherwise.
  • we just have a window unit and some fans. Today the window unit is at 72, we only run it when we are home and sometimes at night but very rarely. It is really hot today, humid and in the 90's!

  • 73 is generally nice.  At night, we just use fans because it cools waaaaay down.  Oh, how I lurve the mountains!

    =)

  • We keep ours around 78-79 and keep it there whether daytime or night. When I head out for the day I turn it off, I've noticed these past few days I can leave for an hour or two and our townhouse will already creep up to 84-85 when we walk in the door but it still feels cool because we are getting out of the high 90s temp with 500% humidity (exaggerating, but man it's rough)

  • I'm in AZ too:

79-80 from 9AM-9PM  with ceiling fans on medium or high!

    74-76 from 9PM until morning.

Unless some certain hot-blooded company is coming over, right?

    ;-)

  • We don't have AC.
  • We only use ours at night (window unit, just for our room) and only if it's unbearably hot and steamy (like 80+ in our room)...then it's at 68*

  • Ugh...we set ours 75-77 during the day and at night 69.  Yes, our electric bill is through the roof, but if it's too warm neither of us sleep.

  • 78 day and night.

Sometimes if it's really humid I'll kick it down to 76 for a few hours.  I hate being in public buildings and freezing my rear off.  I love stepping into the house and it actually being a comfortable live-able temperature.  I dress for the seasons and don't want to have to wear a jacket indoors!!  Basically we just keep it cool enough that it's not uncomfortably hot.

  • We don't have A/C. It's not necessary, since our summers aren't humid and the temps are usually mild. I just open our windows and run on our ceiling fans if it gets hot.
  • I'm in Miami.  We keep it at 72 during the day and 70 to sleep.  When I was pregnant I was SOOOO hot at night so we kept as low as 66 at night.
  • 72

I hate the heat and would keep it colder if it didn't cost so much.

LOL!  I don't do odd numbers either.  We don't have AC, so it's not an issue there, but the radio volume, TV volume, etc. must be on even numbers ONLY. Embarrassed

  • 78 ... I have a programmable thermostat, and I used it when I was working ... but when I programmed it since I've been home, it seemed like I was constantly turning it down again.

I sometimes turn it down a few degrees if we get hot, and we do have ceiling fans in every room that we turn on all the time (right now, I'm trying to remember to turn them off when I leave the room!)

  • We have pretty high humidity and it's about 90-95 so far this summer (will be around 100-105 in August). We set ours at 74 in the daytime, which is sometimes still too hot because of our west-facing windows; but when no one is home it's fine of course. In the evening when DH comes home it's set at 71-72 because he's really hot natured. At night we set it to 69; both of us like to sleep cool.

In the wintertime we set it really cool; about 65-67 daytime and 63-64 at night.

  • Wow. I'm suprised at how many people here keep their houses so cold!!

I live in a very hot and humid place - we've already had several days of 100 temps. I keep our house at 80 most of the day. If I'm feeling warm I will kick it down to 78  but that depends on what I'm doing more than the temp outside. Rarely I turn it down to 77, but when I do I end up bumping it back up again pretty soon because I get too cold!

At night it goes down to 76 for about 2 hours around bedtime and then to 78 for most of the night.

We do have ceiling fans running on high all summer.

  • Our daytime temp is 76 and nightime is 72  and I'll manually adjust if I need to - not super EFF or MM but it's one of the areas that we "splurge" on.  Winter is lower with daytime being like 72 and nighttime like 65.

But I know that different houses and their thermostats result in different ambient temps - my gym is at between 72-75 and I'm fine there when exercising but 75 and working hard at my house is HOT.

  • Our 105 year old house is horrible for regulating the temperature.  I like the thermostat on 76-78 and DH prefers 72.  The upstairs is still pretty warm, but I am chilly downstairs.  Usually it is set at 74-75

The winter is the opposite and I like the heat on 70.
