? for BFers over 1 year - preferably working moms

So, looking forward to hitting the 1 year mark with BFing (ok - two months from now) and wondering if I can get rid of my work pumping session w/o destroying my supply.  I'd like to continue to BF, but I'd love not to have to take 20 minutes to hide out in a conference room or hope no one comes into the small box office area at my other job while I pump.  Just not a fan...  Will not pumping mean losing too much of my supply to keep BFing, or will I still be able to do worthwhile feedings while I'm at home?  Right now, I usually only miss 1 of DS's feedings (leave right after one, and usually DS is ok waiting the extra 20-30 minutes for me to get home for the next one - this is a fairly recent development).  How does it change from about 10 mo - 1 yr?

ETA: I wouldn't drop anything until I hit my 1 yr goal.  It's only after that I'll consider changing things.  :)

  • No experience here, but personally I wouldn't risk it, esp. being so close to your goal.  But in reality, skipping 1 feeding might not be a big deal.  You might want to do a pump session at home to make up, if that is something you could do.

  • Oh - I'm not messing with anything until I hit the year mark.  After that I'm toying with the dropping of the pumping @ work - I don't mind doing it at home.

  • i stopped pumping about 2 months ago and we're still nursing at home.  he gets organic whole milk when hes at daycare but nurses when i'm home.

In that case, I say go with it!

  • From everything I've heard your supply will still be fine as long as you are nursing a couple times each day while you are home.  Obviously I have no experience on this front, but I read the working moms board a lot and several ladies there have done it successfully.

  • I stopped pumping at work regularly at ~11 months.  I pumped 2 or 3 times a week until maybe 15 months when I quit pumping for good.

That worked fine fore us.  He was transitioning to milk from a sippy at that time, so my suply dropped as his goat milk consumption increased.

At 21 months, we are still nursing 3x/day although my supply is tiny at this point.

  • I have lots in the freezer so I started dropping one pumping a month before DS turned one.  Right after that I barely could pump anthing with the one session I had left and my supply in general went way down.  It's ok since I am still giving him frozen, but we are down to just morning and night bf'ing.  I noticed his diapers were barely wet when I was still trying to bf during the day so I am now giving 2 bottles of frozen to replace those feedings.  I would hold off as long as you can if you want to keep up more than morning and night feedings.
  • Nothing has changed from 10mo to 1 yr. =( I was hoping he'd cut back a little but no. I pumped 3x per day until I was finished work last week.

I would think if you had him weaned to whole milk during that pumping session you could drop it without losing morning/evening nursings.

  • I quit pumping at work right around 1 year.  Didn't effect my supply at all.  I continued to nurse evening/morning & for night wakings.  DD finished out my freezer stash during the day and then we switched to whole milk.
