Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Any babies with allergies?

We're about to go to the doctor, but I'm thinking DS might have sesonal allergies.

Any experiences? Is there anything they can even take for this?

I like privacy. A lot.

Re: Any babies with allergies?

  • We went to an allergist last week and she said it's impossible for them to have seasonal allergies--that they would have to be exposed for a season and then go through their 2nd of the same season.  I think it's BS personally--I KNOW my little guy does---but she won't test for that, only foods.

  • My dr won't send me to an allergist becuase she said that they would say the same thing as pp said... but my dr said that it was bs and ds could have allergies, so she recommend Benedryl when it's really bad. Yay for conflicting dr advice. Lol. Benedryl can have 2 effects though, either put child asleep, or make them really hyper so beware. Ds sleeps really well on it thank goodness... :)

I kind of have to agree about it being BS. Though I get the whole maximum exposure explanation. That is why you can develop allergies later in life to things that never bothered you before.  DS breaks out in a rash every time he sits in the grass.  I do too. I'm not sure what to make of that.  Pedi told me I could give Benedryl.
  • My LO food allergies present symptoms like seasonal allergies.
  • my daughter has lots of allergies, and we are actually testing for food and other on Saturday.  She's been on Zurtec since she was about 4 months because she also has eczema.  Zurtec is suppose to be better for smaller children because it doesn?t make them as sleepy and it is approved by doctor to be given to babies 6 months and up where Benadryl is not.  I've heard Benadryl is only recommended for small children where there is a sudden reaction or outbreak, only because it does work faster.  But for seasonal allergies, I would think you'd be better off with Zurtec.

I just don't know if it's something you want to give him all the time.  My daughter is on and off of it, and they usually don't like to give it to her for more than 5 days in a row at a time.

  • I think DS has seasonal allergies but they won't do any testing until he is older. DH and I both have bad spring / summer allergies so I think its completely possible that DS does too. I will usually give him Zyrtec at night before bedtime if they seem to be bothering him...the Zyrtec knocks him out but Benedryl makes him the complete opposite.
