Childbirth classes- expensive!

I just got a call back from our hospital, and the childbirth class is $300! That's per couple, but still, yikes!! Is it worth it?

Re: Childbirth classes- expensive!

  • WOW! That is very expensive! Ours is $30/couple for a 6 week class!

  • That's a lot!  The most expensive one we are offered is $80.  However, maybe yours has a lot more included?
***************************** Our beautiful daughter was born in October 2009. Turns out she was quite the miracle. After two years of TTC, diagnosed with DOR. A couple of failed treatment cycles later, we decided to let go of our hope for more biological children and explore adoption.
  • Wow! All of the natural birthing (Bradley, Hyno etc) around here are $300-$350. The hospital classes are under $100.. What kind of program do they use?

  • WHAT?!?!?  Mine was $40 per couple.  Our Lamaze class might be a little more, I think I remember them telling me it was $60.

  • my hospital offers them from 60-80 bucks per couple.
  • Mine is about that too but we are doing specialized classes.

Look into community classes too- if you are going to try to do natural at all you should do some classes.  I have heard that a shorter class to get you through early labor should be enough if you plan on an epi.

  • Wow, that is really expensive! Ours is $25/ per couple!

  • Wow, can you try a different hospital.  Ours is $100 per couple.

It looks like it's pretty intense and all-encompassing. It's 15 hours total (spread over 5 days) and includes breathing/relaxation techniques, labor signs, pain management options, pushing, C-section, induction... basically, it's a giant detailed overview.

We are NOT planning on doing natural birth, so perhaps I'll look into another class in the city.

  • Woman, you need to move! Smile Come to Nebraska, things are not so expensive here. Economy is better too (not fab but still) I bet you could find a job.
  • mine is 250 i think

    plus 75 for breastfeeding

    plus 80 for cpr

    Ick!

Are you definitely planning to do it? I'm not sure. A friend was on bedrest before delivering her son, so the doctor recommended several DVDs which she sent to us. They're basically a filmed childbirth class, and so far have been really helpful. We may just do that instead...

I do think we'll take infant CPR though. I'm not planning to take a breastfeeding class, because I feel like that's something I'll really need to learn as I go (and may use a lactation consultant later if needed).

We were able to pay for ours through our flex account... that helped the sting a little.

  • Our is $60 and our breastfeeding class is $30.
  • Ours is $185 for a 2-day, 12 hour class.  We'll be paying for it out of flexible spending account.   We're also going to do a Infant care class (DH has zero infant experience and I don't want him using that as an excuse when we get home for the hospital) for $50.
  • All the hospitals in my area offer free classes so I have no idea what a fair rate would be.?
  • Bradley (not in the hospital) - $300

In the hospital: Breastfeeding ($35), Child Care ($35) and Infant CPR ($100)

  • Ours is $90 for 6 2hours sessions... more for other classes. The natural class was high 200/3000.   Our hospital has a short class, not sure if that is cheaper or not but it is only 4 hours.

  • The classes at my hospital are $120 for a 5 week series on delivery (10 hours), $50 for a newborn care class, $30 for breastfeeding, and $60 for CPR. I wasn't sure whether I wanted to take them because I didn't think I would feel like going after a long day at work. I finally decided that if I learned anything that helped me cope during delivery they would be worth it and that they might be a fun way to meet other soon-to-be new parents in my area. It's too bad that your classes are so expensive. It seems like everything costs more in the city. I've heard that some insurance companies will reimburse all or part of the cost so that might be something to look into.

  • WOW that is very expensive.  I thought ours was bad at $170.  Does your insurance cover any of it?
  • Ours is 95 for the birth class, then 30-50 for all the other classes they offer.

  • Ours are $150 for a couple.

    We're not doing it.  meh.

  • Ours is about that, but we are doing Hypnobabies and get a lot of materials with it.
