DH went on a rant after watching "Freebirthing"

Well, I was watching it - he was hanging curtains and caught some glimpses.

He was furious about the risk these women take. He called them selfish and irresponsible. Hmmmmm... I'm on the fence.

I was just wondering why the eff these women have to get completely naked to give birth on TV? Ha.

  • haha...DH walked in when I was watching it and said wtf are you watching? When I told him what it was about, he just said they were stupid.

  • I TiVo'd it and I"m not even going to keep it for DH.  He will be so appalled by it.  I can't believe the chances those ladies were taking, especially the girl who had zero prenatal care, thought she had a low lying placenta, and still didn't seek medical advice.  Very careless.  I'm all for a homebirth if that's what someone wants, but have a midwife there!  I have several homebirth mom friends, and they all were fine, but they all had a midwife present.

  • There was a drama here last night about that show.  I personally am going to try for a homebirth BUT I will have two midwives (registered nurses) and a doula with me.  I am also still seeing both my OB and the midwives. My OB will be on call in case anything goes wrong and I literally live 3 mins away from the hospital. I think it is irresponsible to get NO pre-natal care and give birth alone without any professional assistance!!!
  • I have not seen the show but that does seem very irresponsible especially if it is their first baby.  I'm sure since ancient times there has always been someone present at the birth that has experience/training such as a midwife.

  • We watched it too.  It struck me as being extremely selfish.

These women could have had a midwife present.  If they didn't want interference they could have found one who would stay completely hands-off unless there was a problem or an emergency - why wouldn't you at least have that as a precaution?

    Selfish.  And scary.

It definitely depends on the culture, but typically yes, there has been someone in attendance. I don't think it is wise to skip prenatal care...that just seems odd to me. I would definitely feel much more comfortable with a midwife though...I can't imagine ever wanting to do it without help!!!
