Baby Names

Allison?

What are your thoughts on this name? DH suggested it last night.

We're stumped on girls names - want something classic/normal but not overused. I also like Julia.

Re: Allison?

  • I like Allison a lot but it does seeem a bit dated (maybe 80s-ish?) to me but I do think it's a nice name and I really like Allie as a nn.

Julia is beautiful but it is becoming pretty popular.

  • I was kinda thinking the same thing about it being 80s-ish. The 4 Allisons I know were born between 1978-1980. I like Allie as a nm but not sure if I love Allison.

To me it is a classic name, but it was really, really popular in the 70's & 80's.  I've known at least a dozen Allison/Alison's my age (mid-30's), but I don't know any kids named Allison.
  • I think it's a classic and it's beautiful.  I think the fact that it isn't popular now is a bonus.  Ten and twenty years from now people will be saying Olivia, Ava, and Isabella are dated because those names are so popular now - even though they are classic names.  Allie is a cute nn too!

  • My name is Allyson, although I was born in 1982 not many people in my area have that name.  My mom decided to go with a y instead of an i because she heard having a letter that goes under the staff is good luck.  I'm glad she did, I get commented on it all the time.

I really like Julia as well.

  • It sounds too 80's to me, but is a perfectly fine name. I like Julia a lot better and Juliette even more.

I like Julia more than Allison, but I really like Allison. Allison and Julia are classic. Both are great choices!
  • I love it, but prefer the spelling Alison. However, I really don't like the nn Ali.

  • I think it's a beautiful name
  • I find these replies interesting.  As an Allison, I admit I'm partial.  But it's actually a more popular name now than it was in the 70's and 80's.  I was born in 80, so that's the age I associate it with, but I think previous posters are actually wrong about this.
  • Thanks for the feedback everyone! It's really helpful since we're not planning to share names with friends/family until the baby is born. I think Allison will stay on the short list. Unless we find out it's a boy of course! :)
  • hah, I think it may have originally been a boy's name but of course now it's a girl's name.

I like allie, but to me Alison is Al's son. I know it sounds crazy, but those "son" names always sort of rub me wrong. Jackson, Madison, Addison, etc. too. I'm probably just neurotic.

  • Oh it says it may have started as a diminutive "Alice's son". I guess that connotation is gone for most people though.
