Baking soda and CDs?

I am having stink issues with my GMs.  (I have 5 that we use for overnight, everything else is prefolds.) I've tried with Dawn and super hot water.  I've tried vinegar.  I've tried a few tablespoons of bleach even.  We have hard water but I can't find calgon in the store.

A friend of mine suggested I soak them in baking soda, but I thought I heard that wasn't good for CDs?  Will it work?  Will it hurt the dipes?

Any other suggestions?

Re: Baking soda and CDs?

  • Hmm.  Don't listen to me because I don't know, but I've always sprinkled baking soda in my diaper pail to absorb odors.

I'm also having stink issues with my overnight diapers and am searching for a solution.

  • I've always sprinkled baking soda in the pail without a problem.  With particularly stinky diapers I put a couple drops of  an essential oil in it.  DD has been on solids for about a year and I never had a problem with her diapers...

  • As soon as I started using Baking soda in the diaper pail/ wash, we started having build up issues. We have hard water, so I think that might be the problem. I read that in certain water conditions, the mix of baking soda/ vinegar can actually cause a filmy buildup on fabric - which explains why all my pockets started magically repelling :)

  • Baking soda is usually fine for CDs.  Actually, many of the popular WAHM CD detergents are mostly baking soda.

  • I used baking soda in DS CD's for one wash cycle and it changed the pH for him that it gave him nasty blisters and I had to strip the CD's.  I'd say if you're looking for Calgon look for it on Google and have it shipped if you have issues before you try baking soda.  A lot of moms do use it with no problem, but I wanted you to have the potential other side as well.
