NBR: My baby robins might die :(

We lost a tree in some storms this week and DH cut it up yesterday to haul away. We found a nest and under it were 2 baby robins hopping around (in the 95 degree sun!) and mommy robin flying around freaking out.  They are pretty big, size wise, but they still have hardly any feathers.  I called a regional wildlife place and all I got was a recording with basic instructions.  So I found a small basic, filled it with mulch and made a sort-of nest, put my babies in it, and hung it up in a near by tree.  Do you think Mommy will find her babies?  She is still in the yard this morning, but I don't want to go mess with them if I don't have to.  The wildlife place said to watch them and make sure the mom goes to them, but I have a toddler to watch and it is to hot for us to sit outside bird watching.  I am going to be a mess if those birds die.  Any advice?

  • I have always heard that you should never touch baby birds.  The human scent you leave on them will prevent the mother from returning to take care of them.  I'm no expert, but that's what I've been taught.

  • The wildlife center message said that was an OWT and that you could touch them, but not to handle them much because it causes stress.
  • If the mom is still in the yard she will find them.  When they get hungry they will chirp and she will bring them food.  Once they are that old they probably only have 5 days or less left before they leave (it's amazing how quickly their wings will grow).  We just had some baby robins and they didn't take long to fly away.

  • IDK, but I think it's sweet that you are trying to help.
