2nd Trimester

Flexible Spending Accounts

It is renewal time at my company,  I am not sure how much to put in this year.  I am thinking with a baby there may be more medical expenses than we've ever had before...I wonder if diapers are one of them..I think I will have to ask my hr lady...is anyone else putting more money into their flex account this year?

Re: Flexible Spending Accounts

  • DH & I put $600 into ours before getting bfp- we've almost blown through that entirely. If I could go back I'd put about $1500 in there at least...

  • My contacts alone are $500 for the year, so we always do $2000.  And never have a problem spending it all!

  • I am almost sure that diapers won't count as a medical expense but all of the OTC meds will...tylenol, gas drops, etc.  I am sure you will be able to justify contributing more to your FSA, just don't forget that you lose anything you don't use!  Worst case scenario you can always stock up your medicine cabinet at the end of the year if you have funds left.  If you are using daycare, most places also offer childcare FSA's.
  • We have the 5 year old and increased it last year from 1000 to 1500. We didn't use it all. 1500 should be enough.....
  • I put around $1500 in every year for just me and DH and we go through it pretty easily - contacts for both of us, prescription co-pays, allergy medication, doctors office co-pays, labwork/hospital bills ....

Last year was the first time I came anywhere near not going through it all, but that was because our allergy medication went OTC and dropped the cost by over half, so I had over estimated on that one.  I stocked up the closet with pre-natal vitams, gas drops, etc... to spend the rest.  Didn't take much!

  • We did $1,000 this year because of the pregnancy.
  • google the 213d tax code.  this will list all eligable expenses.  diapers are not included in the list.

We did $700 last year and bumped up to $1000 this year (for 2009). i'm starting to get concerned we won't go through it all because I'm not on bc anymore and I don't have to pay any copay for my prenatal or postnatal visits. But, we'll probably keep it at $1000 for next year. And sorry, diapers aren't included but OTC are, which can really add up!
