2nd Trimester

What no Ice Cream!?!?

My ob told me today that I shouldn't eat anymore ice cream.  I've had 2 kidney stones with this pregnancy.  I've never had any prior to becoming KU.  So he said no more ice cream or iced tea b/c it could lead to more kidney stones.  It's not fair!!!  But I don't want to go through anymore stones...

I have to go see a urologist to see if they need to put a stent in me.  Hope not.

Re: What no Ice Cream!?!?

  • I am just curious how ice cream and iced tea lead to kidney stones.  Please explain.

  • yeeeouch! I had a kidney stone w/ my last pregnancy and man was that the worst pain I've ever been in! Seriously, worse then labor..probably because I didn't know what was going on and it took them until after I passed it to figure it out..

Anyway, my doctor never said no ice cream .. but he didn't know that I ate it every single night! LOL Maybe that had something to do with it... Honestly though, I've never heard that or the iced tea thing. I've heard too much salt can cause them.

Hope you feel better and don't have to get that stent!

  • I know that sometimes when you've had several kidney stones (or just a couple large ones) its recommended that you follow a strict diet, but its much stricter than just no iced tea and no ice cream.

I'm not sure about iced tea, but ice cream and milk contain lots of calcium which kidney stones are made of. I miss grapes and yogurt so much!

Whatever the ingredients are in these have a high probably of oxalating into a stone.  I don't drink iced tea but ice cream on the other hand.

This was just my ob's advise of what I can do in the mean time.  I'm sure the urologist will be able to give me more information.

  • Wow...the iced tea exclusion surprises me.  It seems so innocent and refreshing.
