I work part time and won't get any paid time off for maternity leave. I'm not pregnant now, but I know you have to sign up for short term disabilty through insurance before pregnancy. Did anyone else do this? What should I say to my insurance company when I call them?
Re: short term disability
Yeppers.
I started the process in January and it didn't begin till May 1! By the time they complete all the paperwork, you take a physical, and one complete month of payments....it took a while. I would get on that asap if you are really interested.
I signed up for Short Term Disability and something called "Hospital Confinement Indemnity Insurance" on June 1st since we will be TTC next month.
I would definitely look into Hospital Confinement Indemnity Insurance. Basically you pay into it every month like STD. As long as you are admitted into the hospital for a minimum of 20 hours (which you would be if you had a baby) they pay you $1,000-$1,500 (depending on how much coverage you want) immediately. This helps cover your deductible (if you have one) or other expenses occurred. Also, if you get STD there is a lag period of 7-14 days after you deliver where you will not get a STD check, the money from HCII helps cover that too. Ask your insurance company about Hospital Confinement Indemnity Insurance too. It's also called the New Hospital Income Plan. GL to you!
