2nd Trimester

so whats the deal with pregnancy headaches?

ok, i never get headaches, but pretty much ever since i started the 2nd tri, ive been getting several migraines a week. today i had to leave work early bc it got so bad. i probably shouldnt be sitting in front of the computer, but i was trying to do research seeing what caused this, and hoping my 2 tylenol extra strength kick in. ive found that tylenol really doesnt help, though.

  • Lay down in bed, preferably in the dark with an ice pack on your head.  It seems to work when you can't take the good meds.  Good luck, I went through a similar phase but I never got to migraine status, just bad headaches.  It didn't last for too long tho.

  • yeah, i have the same thing... try a soda or coffee, a little caffeine can help too. otherwise just try to keep drinking ridiculous amounts of water. i know it makes you pee more, but it's a trade off just not to have the throbbing headache. i feel ya! hang in there.

I had the worst headaches during week 13 and into 14 too.  I don't know what caused it, it's gotten better now towards the end of week 14 so I never called my doctor but I'm planning to ask him next week when I see him.  So I can't be of much help, but I got mine exactly when you did too.

  • Let your doc know that they are affecting your work. My Dr also told me to have some caffine and that helped me.
  • I get these every few days too. I talked to my OB and she said that some women get these, especially if you've had migraines pre-pregnancy. Someone on here recommended chasing your tylenol with a glass of Coke. OB ok'd this and it works like a charm every time! good luck.
  • Ugh, I've been getting them more and more too. Today is not a good day. Caffeine didn't help much and I just took some Tylenol EX. Hoping that kicks in soon because DD won't let me take a break ;)

  • I've been having the same problem and my doctor told me to stop using salt and cut out foods high in sodium.    Since I've done that, the number of headaches has greatly decreased.  Don't know if that will work for you, but it may be worth trying...
  • I have them too, they are killer.  My doctor told me today that pregnancy headaches are "snot related," that they are sinus headaches caused by an increase of mucous in your body.  She told me to take claritin or tylenol sinus and that will help a lot more than just tylenol alone.  I hope so, I guess we'll see!

  • I get debilitating migraines several times a week.  I have an appt with a neuro coming up.

Until then, my doctors have me on a regular daily dose of Fioricet- it's tylenol w/ caffeine and something else.  It helps me function.

  • I've always had really bad migraines, and the only thing that helped was Vicodin, which I can't take now!  Caffeine seems to help a little. Mine have always been brought on by changes in the weather and changes in my hormones. I can't take BCP's anymore because the hormones make them so bad. My OB said there's really not a whole lot that can be done during pregnancy, so I'm kind of lost as well.
  • Thanks for posting this question! I've been wondering the same thing... Hope yours go away soon! :)
  • I feel your pain!  It sucks, because Excedrine is all that helps with my headaches and Tylenol is NOT cutting it.  I had one all day yesterday and most of the day today and finally it's going away.  But I have two photo shoots to process, which means a lot of computer work, and I'm dreading it.  Yuck.

Heat compresses laid on my head and eyes seems to help a lot, but only while the compress is hot and while I have it on.  It's temporary, but at least you might get a bit of relief!

  • thank you so much, ladies!!! im going to try drinking a coke along with the tylenol in the future and see if that helps. the cold compress to the forehead has helped, too.
  • I see a migraine specialist at a headache clinic, and both he and my OB said to try 1000mg of Tylenol first, and if that doesn't work, then 1 or 2 Tylenol-3s (vicodin).  I worried about the codeine in the vicodin, but they both said that it's much safer than many of the migraine drugs out there for the baby.
