Newborn fitted - BG AIO xs and HH sherpa xs...opinions?

Anyone try BumGenius AIO xs or Happy Heinys fitted sherpa xs for the newborn stage?  I was at a local boutique yesterday that carries a few brands of cloth diapers so I decided to purchase some.  I also purchased 2 Thirsties xs fleece fab-fitted.  I also plan to get some Kissaluvs0 as those come highly recommended for newborns.  Should I purchase some newborn doublers - fleece, hemp, bamboo?  I currently have 3 Thristies xs covers but might get another one.  I plan to wash every two days so I was thinking of having about 24 newborn diapers total, does that sound right?

  • No info regarding the two diapers in question but my NB experience:

    - Doublers and inserts are pointless because you are pretty much changing every 2 hours.

    - For my DD, Thirsties XS wasn't small enough for the first 2 weeks and she was 7 lbs, 9 oz at birth.  We were big fans of the Bummis Super Brite covers during that period (and until 5 weeks or so).

We had 6 KL0s, 3 GMD NB fitteds, 3 Thirsties fitteds, used like 6-8 PFs once we got the hang of CDing and found that having at least 4 covers made life easy.  Was enough diapers for those first few weeks.  We did laundry every other day and sometimes every day since I was home on maternity leave and had major anxiety issues that seemed to be calmed by doing routine things I could still do in my lack of sleep/4th degree tear/overwhelmed condition like laundrySmile

On a side note, it's funny, but I really enjoyed CD laundry those weeks I was on Mat. Leave.  I felt as though I wasn't good at BFing, at APing, at anything really.  I felt ditzy and sleepy and disorganized.  But CDing... learning how to do it, launder, etc. made me feel as though I was capable and could get through it all.  Learning how to CD with DH really brought us together too.

  • my little guy was 6lb 8 oz when we started CD. i used Blueberry XS AIOs and BG AIO XS.  both fit him just fine.  i loved the AIOs b/c they were so similar to the disposables that i was familar with. started out with just a few and expanded to 27 XS diapers which meant i could do laundry every 2-3 days.

Now we use Nana's Bottoms. i really like them. they are cheaper than BG, but just as good. i think the XS would have worked really well for my tiny baby.

eta: we used the XS until DS was 25 weeks then i sold them.  i was able to get enough $ back to buy the small and medium diapers.
  • I didn't CD with a newborn, but I currently use the BG AIO in size medium (have since she was about 2 months old) and I love them! They are so easy and trim compared to other diapers (specifically pockets).

I turn them inside out so they dry a little faster in the dryer. I've always done this, not sure if it's needed or not :)

  • We had 10 BG AIO xs and I didn't care for them.  They leaked a lot.  I'm not sure if I was just having repelling issues or they just weren't absorbant enough.  I had to fold a cloth wipe in half and put that in the diaper just to add some absorbancy, then they worked ok.  I got them all as gifts, but I felt bad that they cost so much and they only fit my son for about a month.

I liked prefolds and the KLOs much better.  I also had one Thirsties fab fitted xs, I liked that one and it seemed to fit my son longer than the BG ones did.

  • Loved BG AIO XS! They were so convienent and great. Didn't love our XS Heinny huggers at all. Some were ok, but many had snaps that were misplaced, too weak, or so strong it felt like they were ripping trough the fabric when we tried to un do them. Really really didn't like them at all. We have a few size smalls, and for some reason these seem a bit better than the XS's we had (some new, some used, from several different places). Prefered KLO and defnitely Nannipoos for NB fitteds, and loved loved loved the BG XS AIOs. I'd totally skip any doublers since containment matters so much more than absorbancy. For covers, I think it depends on how many fitteds/prefolds you end up with vs. AIOs/pockets. 3 could be fine, or you may find you need more, it just really depends. Also it depends if you're changing lots of wet diapers or if every single one is a poopy diaper (DD pooped in all but one diaper for 6 weeks... it was nuts), lol. 24 is probably a bit low for every 2 days, so I'd add some pre-folds in the mix. We just tri-folded them into the covers and they worked really well. They also lasted longer fit-wise than any of her other NB diapers. HTH some, good luck! :)
