Read "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child"?

I'm in the middle of it and it's a great book but I seriously wonder if we will be able to follow his suggestion of putting LO to bed each night by 5:30-6:30pm. I'm sure he's correct that that's a great time but if I do that, DH and I will NEVER see this little bunny since we won't get home from work till then.?

Which then makes me one of the selfish parents he describes in the book that keep their LO up so they can play with it. Ahhh!

  • My friend is a obgyn and a mom of a 4 year old and a 4 month old and she swears by this book.  I haven't read it yet, but need to.

  • My sister swears by this book (her son is 13 months, and a great sleeper).  SWEARS by it - recommends it to everyone she knows.

I'm definitely going to try it out - do you think you can alter your work schedule to make the sleeping schedule work?

  • It's on my nightstand. I need to read it.
  • it's on my nightstand too. haven't read it yet. i got it before i decided i was going to do babywise. i will probably at least skim it to see what it says. i had a friend recommend it to me and she said they got it too late and it saved them - but she wishes she had read it sooner.
  • Is he recommending this sleep schedule right from the start?  My list of books to read is growing too fast.  I plan on bf'ing and would like to feed LO on demand at first so I don't know how a sleep schedule will work out for us.  I do want her to be on some type of schedule and am clueless as to how to do this so I guess I should read up on it huh....

  • I really liked it when I read it for DD (she as about 6 months old at the time).  It is sitting on my nightstand for a refresher.

It is definitely hard when they have an earlier bedtime.  My DH use to hate that she went to sleep about 30 min after he walked in the door.  However, the thing to remember is that you need to follow their cues and make sure they are getting enough overall sleep, which might mean a slightly different bedtime than he suggests.  From what I remember he is more of go by when they last woke up than the follow the clock in the beginning (i.e., they woke up 2 hours ago so it is time for sleep vs it is 5:35 so it is time for sleep/it is 5:00 so we can't let them fall asleep until 5:35).  It isn't until they hit a certain age that he says go by the clock.

  • I read bits and peices and used some peices of the advice, but I seriously felt like I was reading manuel instructions, I thought it was very hard to understand.
  • If this is the book I'm thinking of, I never read it but loosely followed the doctor's advice from a condensed article that I read and advice from my ped. DS was sleeping from 10/11pm to 6am by 8 weeks and through the night shortly thereafter. It was rare to have to rock or nurse him to sleep too as we put him down drowsy and still happy and he was asleep with in 15 minutes.
