Sorry if this has been asked, but I didn't see anything about it ...
Do any of you use CDs and have your child in daycare? I'm planning to go with a family daycare, and would like tips on how to bring it up with the caretaker. I know in some states daycares are required to use CDs if requested, but not in my state (Maryland).
I don't see it as a big deal, just take the dirty diaper and put it in a wetbag for me to take home, but the caretaker may not feel the same way.
Any tips would be welcome as I'm starting to meet with people in the next week or two.
Thanks much.
Re: CDs and daycare
your location is "DC area"... are you in DC, Maryland or VA? It makes a difference, as the regulations are different for the different places.
State licensed centers in VA cannot (by law) do CD unless you have a note from a doctor that says that your child cannot wear disposables. Even with the note, centers can turn you away.
I'm in Maryland. Glad I'm not in VA, I guess!
It's not against MD regulations to use CDs. We have DD in a center (Harford County), and I fought with the licensing specialist about it. The center was all for letting us use them, but the specialist gave me a really hard time about it.
First she said it's not allowed, to which I told her that I read the COMAR, and it doesn't say that. Second, she said that the COMAR states that they shall be in accordance with the approved diapering policy (which it does). She then went on to tell me that said policy states that the child must wear disposables, and even went so far as to quote the chemical used in them. I told my center's director about this conversation, and she called BS. I got a little testy with the specialist, and basically said that I was unhappy that there was no room for compromise.
Long story short, I typed up a memo with my proposal about making it work without being a detriment to the staff and the other kids, and sent it in. Low and behold, we're allowed to use CDs at a day care center in MD. My understanding is that the specialist told my center that they're allowed to do it, but it's not something they want to advertise.
But you said you were looking at in-homes. I agree to take a pocket or AIO so that they can see how easy it is. If you agree to do all the supplies and the cleaning, they'll most likely be more than agreeable to it.
Wow -- sounds like an ordeal! Glad you were able to work it out.
I met with a child care consultant who comes to my employer every month and she checked into the MD regulations for me -- from what she said, CDs are definitely allowed but providers aren't required to use them.
So I think I will bring a diaper with me to show the caretaker and hope that works.
Thanks for the advice, everyone -- helpful as usual.
I'd use an "easy" CD like a pocket or AIO. I'd also bring one with you to show the caregiver when you meet with them. I've met with 4 daycare centers and all 4 were open to using my CD's. They were all so surprised to see how much they have changed since they were used back in the day. The centers I met with have certain codes they have to follow and all 4 told me they could not clean out the poop. They will put the diapers in a plastic bag (Ugh!!) and then into my wetbag and I will have to take home daily.
Good luck!
Download the state regualtions for infant care in your state. Read them and make sure you are not asking anything that they can not do for you.
Take your wetbag and a sample diaper [please don't expect them to "learn" multiple brands for you] and show them what you are talking about. I took a Haapy Heiney [and that is the only brand I would take to the facility although I have others in my stash].
I JUST did this starting last week and only one local chain refused CDs. They tried to lie and say it was state regulation, but I informed them I had a copy of the regs at home, so I would need them to quote the Article and paragraph for me...
Needless to say, the director became very uncomfortable and apologized profusely for lying to me... As if I would take my child to such a place?
