breaking the paci habit- anyone try cutting the nipples off?

I think we are going to have to try this.  Any success stories out there?

  • I did.  I'll see if I can find my post about it...
  • I was just gonna post today and ask you if you had tried the social story yet??

I guess I posted my "no more pacis" story right after you posted about your story because you reminded me.  Maybe you've already read it?

Our good friends did the exact same thing we did about two weeks later after I told them of our success.  They had two rough nights, and their dd hasn't asked for her since either.

  • He loves the story, but I am not sure he is making the connection.  Or maybe I am just scared.  Not sure how we will explain them being cut though either.  He is a serious addict.
  • Jackson bit through all of his so then we took them away - so I guess, technically it worked for us.  GL!

Unless you are really set on getting rid of them right now, I'd maybe give it a few months - I thought Jackson would never give his up and just up and did it a few weeks ago and he's a few months older than Noah.

  • I wouldn't care if he kept it in his bed only, but he wants them ALL.THE.TIME. now.  It's getting worse everyday.  Maybe we'll wait until the weekend to cut the nips.
  • YES.  This is the only thing that worked for both of my kids.  I did it when my oldest was a little over 2 and for my youngest when she was 22 months.  We told them that it was "broken" and big girls "break" their paci's.
Mom to DD 6.5 years, DD 5 years, DS 18 months
  • I'm scared too.  I've been making excuses for a long while....  moving, 2 yr molars, potty training, etc. etc.  We will be going for his first dentist appt within the next 3-4 months and I'm thinking of asking the dentist to tell him that the paci is hurting his teeth (even though I know this isn't entirely true) and he needs to send it to the "Bop Man" who lives in the clouds.  DS calls his paci "Bop".  Then, gonna get him a big bunch of helium balloons to tie the bop to and let him let it go.  Got that idea from someone else on here.  I may also have the "Bop Man" send him a letter to explain further and also send him a treat after.  I am probably WAY overthinking, but it just feels so mean to take it away!  And, I DO NOT want to mess up my awesome sleeper!

Yeah, we went through a stage like that - so frustrating.  What's funny is like 2 weeks later he was okay with me just tossing them since he bit through them.  Jackson was a TOTAL addict.  I'd try cutting them then b/c Jack didn't want them AT ALL after that.

  • my friend did that and her soon did not want the "broken" paci's anymore...

    worked for them.

  • We did it with DD right before she turned 2.  We cut the end off.  At first, she didn't even notice and tried sucking on it anyway.  I had to point out that her paci was "broken."  Once she saw that she said, "Go and get a different one..in the kitchen."  I told her that we didn't have anymore and that was the only one she had left.  She tried to hang onto what little tip was left the 1st night.  She took it to bed with her the 2nd night, but didn't really use it.  By the 3rd night she wanted to throw it in the garbage by herself.  They did the same thing at daycare with her and it worked like a charm.  DD was extremely attached to her paci too, and I was afraid it was going to be a nightmare to get rid of it!  She did so much better than I thought she would :)  Good luck!
