Does anyone have a pressure mounted baby gate vs. one that screws into the wall? We have a single step that leads from the hall into our living/dining room and I think we need a gate for it. Mikayla learned to climb up on the stair awhile ago (she sees it as a game now - climbs up the stair and turbo crawls down the hall giggling gleefully) - I'd like to keep her in the living/dining room area because it's easier to babyproof, plus she took a tumble down the stair and bonked her head today, poor baby.
Because of where we want to put the gate I'd like to avoid screwing into the wall and just found that they make pressure mounted gates. If you have one, is it pretty sturdy? I can see M pulling up on it all the time. And if you have a rec for a certain brand/style please share!
Re: Pressure mounted baby gates?
at the top of stairs, you want a screw in one so that in the event that they do push through, they don't fall down the stairs. But with one stair, I think the pressure ones would be fine.
If it's a doorway you walk through a lot, I would get one with a swing gate so you dont' have to walk over it or take the whole thing off to get through.
We have this one:

It's at the bottom of our stairs. So it gets used a lot. (Well it's down now, but it did get a lot of use)... It was REALLY secure once we got it really tightened up. The thing that was good about it was that all four corners adjusted separately, so that we could deal with moulding and a stair banister of different widths and get it to fit right.
I know there's one where you step on the bottom to make the center gate open up, but that won't work on a stair like that - but those are nice for regular doorways so you can go through hands free.
We got all of our gates through Amazon.
When she gets bigger you will REALLY have to watch her to make sure she doesnt' try to hang on it. That will work it loose. Ben tries to hang on the one at the top of our stairs a lot. And ours isn't even latched anymore. So he can get through easily. He jsut likes to pull on it.
We got one for our super wide landing. However, DH got these little circle things and he glued them to the wall so that we just slide the gate into them. (Kind of like something that you'd put a shower curtain rod end into...
Anyway, ours is from BRU. I think it's an evenflo and we've been happy with it.
This is the one we have:

It's incredibly sturdy and tall - it'll be a while before DD can get around it. It can be a pressure gate, but comes w/hardware so you can use it at the top of the stairs, too... I just read the reviews, and I don't think the ppl who had cons about it installed it properly, b/c the thing acts like freakin' fortress over here.
And it's very attractive - not the most important thing, but doesn't hurt!?
For the PP who uses a pressure gate at the top of the stairs... please, please rethink that... but cwhip, you should be fine for just 1 stair. ?
We have this one and love it!

It can install pressure or hardware mounted and is a little tricky to unlatch (good for our super-smart escape artist
. We liked the look of it and that it adjusts to fit different widths.
