3rd Trimester

boob question

So I am just about due, and my boobs have no sign of leakage yet.... trust me, I am not complaining!  I am just wondering how "they" will know when it is time to breastfeed.  I think that it is so weird that they can go from nothing at all, to full fledged breastmilk in no time at all.  At least that is what I am hoping for... will my baby be able to breastfeed right away if I have this baby today???

  • Your hormones will shift during and after labor and delivery.  You will not have full fledged breastmilk for a few days but the baby can still nurse.

  • Pretty sure a hormone is released to stimulate milk production. And it may take a couple days for your "milk to come in". I wouldnt be complaining about not having leaky boobs. It sucks! Colostrum should be produced soon after birth tho.
  • They just get the colostrum the first few days, don't worry about not having breastmilk yet. I believe it has to do with a shift in hormones once the baby is born your body knows what to do.
  • Your body will know what to do, it's all a hormonal thing. Plus when babies are first born they only need a marble sized amount of milk. You will be fine. Smile

  • Yep, it's a change in your hormones.  Don't worry, I didn't have any leaky boobs with DS and my milk came in on day 2 - no probs breastfeeding him.  The girls will figure it out  Wink

  • Your hormones will know when to start producing milk after birth.  I never leaked with DS#1 (or this time) and my milk came in 2 days after he was born and we successfully nursed for 10 months.  It can take up to 4-5 days for milk to come in, but there is another fluid there (I can't think of the name) that will provide the baby all it needs from your breast until your milk comes in.

  • I leaked with my first child and haven't leaked without "checking" cuz I was concerned about not leaking this time.  I actually just read an article that said that some people don't leak at all and that's normal.
