Letterman vs. Palin - did the joke go too far?

Letterman's joke about Palin's daughter -  "One awkward moment for Sarah Palin at the Yankee game. During the seventh inning, her daughter was knocked up by Alex Rodriguez!"

From what I've read, he meant it to be about Bristol, but it was Palin's 14 year old that was at the game with her. And, I guess it was supposed to be a shot at ARod.

Thoughts? Did Letterman take it too far or is Palin making too much out of this?

  • I think that joke went too far

  • For either girl, I think that is inappropriate.  Those girls are very young.  It would maybe be different if her daughters were in their mid 20's or something, but Bristol is barely even of legal age, baby or not.

  • I think Letterman's a class act by addressing it and clarifying.?

And the Palin's, who are insinuating that Letterman meant to be making a joke about their daughter being RAPED are WAY out of line, IMO.?

  • I think the joke was completely tasteless, but the Palins are also making too big a deal of it. They are claiming it was a joke about raping their 14-year-old daughter, which is really stretching it. It was inappropriate, regardless, but Letterman apologized, didn't he?

    I agree with this.

I think it was highly inappropriate of him to make the joke, but the way the Palin family is acting now is also inappropriate.

    ?

But if they let it go, they fade back into obscurity! LOL ?They have to keep complaining about "rape" jokes or people will forget who they are.?

  • Agreed that it was an unnecessary joke, but the Palin's are taking it way too far.

    this is exactly it.

  • Yes- it was inappropriate- but i don't think everyone needs to make such a big deal about it.  Comics say inappropriate things all the time.... let his fans judge him and his jokes --- the rest of the country doesn't need to get involved.

if i was Sara Palin i'd say "that was disgusting to say" but i wouldn't keep going with it.

  • I do not know the history of this but I would be pissed if that was said about my 14yo (or my 18yo even if she did get PG as a 17yo.)  But, that is what happens when you put your kids in the spotlight, comedians will make fun of them!  Hell, people made fun of Chealsea Clinton's looks and she did not get PG at 17.

  • inappropriate, yes.  most comics do stretch it to that point though. and when you put your dd in the spotlight, then the child can be a target for comedians and others... I mean, people commented on chelsea b/c of her looks when she was 12, not the same topic, but she was a target.  I do believe him when he says it was about bristol, Bristol is an adult, who is putting herself out there with this campaign for abstinence (after stating previously that it did not work.). she is young yet and could take things hard... but she is an adult too.  She's 18 and a mother.  She needs to toughen up and mommy and daddy speaking out and overexaggerating things, doesn't help her.  Palin needs to grow up as well.
  • Halo...you are wrong.  Did you not hear the joke?  It was "supposed" to be about Bristol but Bristol wasn't even at the game.  BTW...Chelsea's looks and a 14 year old getting knocked up by an older guy...Umm...I'm thinking totally different!

Yes...he went too far and I blame his writers for that since he was only reading what they wrote.  Obviously they will be clarifying who they are joking about next time.  As for the rape...yep...if they are 14 and he is suggesting getting knocked up...she would have been raped if the guy is over 18 (which A-Rod is).  I don't think the Palins are taking it too far at all.

It would be interesting if he had made the same joke about Obama's oldest daughter.  OMG...we would NEVER hear the end of it.

I think of it this way...if he said something like that about my oldest DD (who is an adult)...it would be up to her to make a statement (and she would) but if he said something about my youngest DD...then he better watch out.

So...would any of you with DD's NOT feel the same way if the joke was made about YOUR DD???
