What was the first real food you fed your baby?

We're thinking about letting Connor try real food.  He's really into watching us eat.

  • Good question! I want to hear the answer too. I've heard rice cereal mixed with breast milk (if bf'ing) is the way to go, but I want someone to back that up.

  • We started P with rice cereal and breast milk but it caused her extreme constipation issues so we moved to oatmeal and she was fine.  You can mix it with formula, breast milk or water.  Have fun!!
  • there's a really good list of readiness cues on www.wholesomebabyfood.com to assess whether your child is really ready to start solids.   Just shwoing interest in food isn't really enough.  He'll show interest in you peeing too.  Or doing a somersault.  You're just interesting!  :)

That said, we started with bananas, then avacados.   We never did rice cereal.  The only reason you "traditionally" start with rice cereal is that they used to start kids way too early on foods and their digestive systems couldn't handle anything else.

We went oatmeal first exactly for this reason...our daycare provider suggested starting with oatmeal and just bypassing rice cereal. He loved it.

  • Sweet potato puree when she was almost 6 months. Rice cereal doesn't offer much as far as nutrition. :(

  • We did baby oatmeal for about 4 days and haven't done any since. (come to think of it maybe I should try that again since she won't effin' eat anything.) After that her first food was avocado.

  • Rice cereal with breast milk.

Then we switched to baby oatmeal with BM

    Then avocado

    Then sweet potato

  • First mashed avocado, then mashed sweet potatoes.  We skipped any sort of baby cereal for lack of nutritional content.
