One of the security guards at my office always calls me "young lady."  I know he means it in a nice way, but I find it patronizing and unprofessional. He calls the men "Sir,"  not "young man."

No.  It would make me feel young!  And it's better then being called ma'am.  That makes me feel old.

Nah, wouldn't bug me.  I often have store clerks call me honey or sweetie even though I'm usually older than them!  I'm sure it's just habit and not a personal insult.  I'll take that over surly any day.

I hear you.  If he's really being friendly about it though, I'd just smile and tell him my name.  I'd rather be called by name than "young lady".

No, ditto the PP - it makes me feel young! (Which I am, but I haven't felt much like it since having a family.) He sounds better than the one at my work... he is a creep and stares at me as I'm walking toward or away from him... even though I'm all big and pg! And he tries to make very uncomfortable small talk... ugh... I try to leave after he does just to avoid him. Yours just sounds like a nice older man...
