What kind of cabinate locks do you have?

DS is on the verge of walking and is in high speed crawling mode all the time. He loves to get into the Kitchen and open up the cabinate doors. So it is time for baby proofing the kitchen.

Which Cabinate locks do you have? We don't have door pulls so we can't strap stuff onto those and I would like to not drill holes into the cabinates.

  • We use Tot Loks, but you do have to drill holes for them. They are the best though, and completely invisible from the outside. I love them. I've never seen really good ones that you don't have to use hardware for. I understand, though - I don't like to drill holes in my home, either - but sometimes it's worth it. To minimize the amount of Loks we'd have to install, I reorganized the entire kitchen so only harmless things were in the bottom cabinets and the hazardous things were in the top ones. Then we only had to use Loks for the cabinets under the sink. HTH!

  • tot locks are the only real child PROOF locks out tehre that I know of. They have a magnetic "key" you have to use to open the cabinet or drawer. They're good. They're a pain in the ass though for things you get in and out of a lot.  But you absolutely NEED them for any cabinet that has poisons/cleaners/etc in them.

We just have ones that you sort of push down and unclip to open up.  But you can open the cabinets about 3 inches before it catches.  So a kid could get his hand in there and pull out cleaners.   I use these for "nuisance" protection.   Things I don't really want him getting into, but not things that would kill him.

we moved all of our cleaners and everything out from under the sink, so there's nothing low enough for him to reach.   In our bathrooms thtough, we used the Tot Locks under our sinks b/c there's medicine and cleaners in there.  And we don't get into those a ton, so it was easy enough to leave it there.

I also recommend leaving a few cabinets available to your child.  Ones with tupperware, napkins, etc.  And/or devote a drawer to your kid to put stuff in and play wtih whenever he wants.  I think that helps keep them from bothering with the other drawers.

  • oh and ours are drilled. But you can sort of twist them out of the way if/when you're done using them. So you don't have to uninstall them and leave holes.
