NBR Poll

MIL tried to help clean my kitchen this weekend, and when I opened the dishwasher to finish loading it, nothing in there had been rinsed off. There were dry baked beans, mashed potatoes, and macaroni & cheese from two nights ago crusted onto everything in there. I had to remove everything to rinse it off and reload it. So tell me:[Poll]

Re: NBR Poll

  • Mine look clean when I load them. The dishwasher is just to reassure me that they are spotless. I am anal about dishes.

  • We used to have a dishwasher that no rinse was needed. It was powerful! But we moved, and now I need to scrub everything off before I load including coffee residue in mugs.

This is me too! I use the dishwasher because the water gets hotter than when I handwash, but everything goes in looking like it has been washed.

  • I think this depends on your dishwasher. I don't leave actual pieces of food on my dishes, but I don't need to rinse them off completely before I put them in. They come out clean without it :)

Same here.  I miss my other dishwasher (stainless steel, super fast & quiet).  I was just complaining to DH yesterday that our dishwasher is a POS.  We need a new one.

  • The Today Show did a segment about this a little while ago.  The expert on dishwashers said that you no longer have to rinse dishes before you load them in.  In fact she said not to- you're wasting water.  The newer dishwashers are built to deal with crud.  Of course if you have a dishwasher from 1980, like me, rinsing is a must!

  • A dishwasher repairman even told me not to really rinse dishes off before loading. That is what the dishwasher is for, and it can actually ruin your dishes (etching) from the water and soap not having anything to do. (Those aren't his exact words, but that was the main idea of his statement.)
