Lauri...or our other expert bakers...

Anyone know where I can find a surf board cake pan?  I want to do a luau theme for Cruz's b-day this year and thought the surfboard cake would be something I could actually do lol!  But I can't seem to find a pan?  Also has anyone ever bought fondant to use?  I found some fondant online that I thought I would try?

  • I am not Lauri  ;)  but what if you just baked three cakes in a long rectangle pan and then just cut the top and bottom of the surf board out of two of the cakes?  Then you can just cover the three cakes with fondant and no one would know they were 3 cakes!

  • You can also buy fondant at the craft store.  Or google marshmallow fondant recipe and make your own!

Ace of Cakes style!  This is that I would do!

  • I say cut out the shape you want out of cardboard and then just lay it on the cake and cut around your template!!!  It should work fantastic!  Good luck!
  • And just use a box cake with a package of pudding added to it.  No one will know it is a box cake.  Make sure to spray the pans really good with Pam so that they won't stick.  You should be good to go!

  • I'd bake the cake in a rectangular pan and cut it to shape it like a surfboard. I'd definitely do a trial run if you're doing fondant. Also, most people don't really like the taste of fondant so you should know that (although I hear the marshmallow type isn't half bad). You could also frost the cake with regular frosting and do some of the surfboard details in fondant (like pin stripes, or use a cookie cutter to cut out tropical flowers).

Another alternative for a luau is a volcano cake, you know the kind that erupts? That wouId be really fun!  I'm sure you could google how that's done.
