Baby Names

Max - Oh No!

Well, I guess Max is on an upswing.  So far, this has been the one name that my husband and I have both been comfortable with for a boy.  On Friday, Lance Armstrong announced the birth of his new baby, Max (and I live in Austin where everybody is Lance crazy).  Then, my husband and I watched Million Dollar Babies on VH1 this weekend and learned that both J.Lo and Christina Aguilera named their boys Max.  I think it's time to go back to the drawing board, but my husband doesn't think it's that big of a deal.  Even though Max may not have been the most popular name this past year, I worry that it's going to hit Aiden and Jackson proportions very soon.  Any thoughts?

Re: Max - Oh No!

  • Forget about the celebrities who have used it. It's popular in general so it's not like using Maddox and everyone thinking of Angelina. If you like it, use it. It is popular and going to get more popular though- if that really bothers you, then I guess reconsider. But I wouldn't drop it because of Lance, JLo and Christina. :)

  • I really am not into the overly popular name and the Tom, *** and Harry names are nms.  Our name list has mainly consisted of very Hebrew names and very Italian names (Ari, Ilan, Asher, Carlo, Gino, Marco, Salvador).  Max was a great middle ground.

Then go with what you love.

I don't know a single Max IRL.  Both Christina and J.Lo's babies are at least a couple years old.  If Max were to suddenly spike in popularity, it would have happened by now

  • I like it. I only know one Max IRL, and he is my age. If its going to get more popular, its going to get more popular. Not much you can do about it, so you might as well not worry too much.

  • I guess I should say "Tom, Rick, and Harry" names.  Didn't know I would get bump-censored on that one.
  • I think of Max as popular, but not in an over-the-top way.
  • Don't worry about the celeb babies, it will rule out all the good names! Max is popular overall but I don't see it as a 'celeb name'. If you like it then use it.
  • I agree with some of the other postings don't drop it because of celebrities but if your worried about it being really popular you might want to reconsider it then. I personally hate popular names only because my name is Sarah and my whole life I have had to deal with tons of Sarah's around me. In fact just the other day at my OB office, I was in the bathroom giving a "sample" and someone said Sarah right next to the door and I kept say yes? but they were talking to someone else, and if that wasn't enough, in the waiting room they called Sarah back and myself as well as another girl got up....it can sometimes be annoying although I like my name.

    This exactly.

  • I hear the name a lot on this board but don't know anybody named Max IRL. Like the others, I wouldn't think twice about what the celebs are naming their babies. Go with what you like.

  • Max is very popular and it's going to get even more popular. I think it's a great name, but if you don't want a popular name go with something else.?
  • It's definitely rising in popularity, but I wouldn't consider it uber-popular yet. It's got nothing on Aiden, Jayden, and the like. In fact, the only Max that I know is my dad---who may just end up getting a grandson named after him!

  • Max is also at the top of our list, but I am leaning towards maybe rethinking it when the time comes.
