If you have a potty trained toddler...

that uses a little potty at home, how do you deal with public outings? My will go pee/poo in his little Baby Bjorn potty, but is scared of the regular toilet. If he gets fully potty trained, I'm wondering what I will do if we are out (like in the mall) and he needs to pee. What do you do??

Re: If you have a potty trained toddler...

  • I keep a potty in the car. At our mall they have fmaily restrooms with a little potty that she goes on, but mostly we use the potty in the car.

  • What if you're somewhere that doesn't have a little potty in the restroom? Do you just walk back to your car each time she has to go?

  • We used to keep a potty chair in the car but then I got a cushie seat from Amazon.  I have to say it is the best $10 I have ever spent.  DD absolutely loves the thing and likes to unfold it and put it on the toilets herself.  She never hesitates to let me know when she has to go potty when we're out because she loves using it.

    Here it is Cushie Seat

  • I have a dollar store potty that I clip onto the stroller in a shopping bag.  I just take her to the regular bathroom and sit it on the floor for her.
  • I have a potty seat similar to the cushie mentioned before.  It folds up and fits in your diaper bag.  You can get them at any store (Target, WalMart, TRU, etc.) and they cost around $10.  Oh and they come with characters on them - SpiderMan, Dora, Elmo, etc.

  • Well, first I think you need to get him to use a potty seat on the regular toilet at home. Otherwise no fold-up seat topper is going to help you.

I bought one of those fold-up seats at BRU (a plain white one, store brand I think). I took it back almost immediately, the darn thing wouldn't unfold flat and stay flat! So you have to hold it down with one hand and pick up your toddler... one handed? with your 2nd and 3rd hands? IDK.

So, I just set DD on the big potty when we're out. I squat in front of her and hold on to the small of her back. It works for us, she's not scared of it now, though she did keep a death-grip on my neck the first few times.  We've done this countless times at the mall, library, grocery store, restaurants, etc.

I really hate carrying a diaper bag and am pretty lousy at keeping up with all the gadgets that some people carry, so I just do without.

  • DD uses any potty, I have her hold my legs so she doesn't touch anything & I either hold her under her arms or small of her back.  Also I found that if you put them on the side of the toilet it is more secure feeling for them.

  • Try sitting him backwards on the toilet, facing the tank with his legs straddled.  Some kids really prefer this.
