Church Goers Poll

I'm curious:

Post what church you go to.  If you are uncomfortable with that, what denomination, religion, etc.

Also, how often do you go and would you consider yourself "involved"?

Is church a new thing for you or have you always gone to church?

Re: Church Goers Poll

  • I don't have a specific church, unfortunately :(  I can't get DH to go with me and I struggle with whether to go without him or not since we have such little time together.

    I am Episcopalian though :)

  • I grew up Baptist but I haven't gone in years.

DH was Catholic when he was younger, but he's currently going to UPC.

We do go to Compline at St. Marks on 3-day weekends, though.  It's too late for us to go any other time, which bums me out because I love going to  Compline.

  • I'm Catholic, I don't have a church right now though....probably because I don't go very often either.  I'm in the same boat as IG.  DH wasn't raised with religion and doesn't really feel that comfortable going so its hard to take time away from him.

However, he has agreed that once we have kids he's willing to go more because it is important to me that they have a religious foundation like I grew up with.

  • I was born and raised catholic, however I just started going again.  My DH is catholic too so I am hoping he will start going with me.  I would like our son to get baptized.  I found a church close to home called St. John The Baptist.

  • We go to The Church On The Ridge. ?We are pretty involved. ?We are part of a community group and volunteer (although not nearly as often as we did before Evie). ?We used to go every Sunday, but it's been hit & miss since we had Evie because she's a horrible sleeper and I won't wake her up early or put her down late in order to make the service. ?Same with community group. ?It meets once a week, but we only make it once or twice a month.

The church is pretty non-denominational but the charter says its an Assemblies of God church. ?My family rarely went to church growing up--maybe once every few years or so. ?Even though we weren't involved in church, I've always had a desire to know God. ?When I was 16 and could drive myself, I started going to church on my own.

This exactly....that's why it's so tough.  I really want Maddy to have that baseline.

  • We go to  Faith Baptist Church in NE Tacoma

We go to Sunday School, Sunday Morning Worship Service, Training Union at 6pm on Sunday night (follows the school year, so Summers off), Sunday night service, and Wednesday night service.

James does security (wears a little ear piece and everything).  I am not currently involved in anything.

I have always gone.  The church we went to in Everett before we moved down here, I have been going to since I was born (before that even in my mom's tummy).  We went there until we moved down here and started going to this church.

I am Catholic. I was actually a Catholic school teacher at my parrish, so I was super involved in the community. But since having the baby, I haven't gone to mass.

My parrish is kind of far away from where I live and I need to find one closer to home, but it's hard to leave "your church."

I am hoping that because DH isn't working Sundays anymore, that now he will go with me. (He's Catholic too!) I also wanted to wait until M was vaccinated to go back.

  • We go to Edgewood Bible Church (on Meridian, down from Safeway and Albertsons) Just your average Bible believing Christian church

We try and be really involved. DH and I volunteer in the Awana program and help with the 5th and 6th graders on Wed night. My dad is the Sunday School Superintendent my mom does all the finances with the church, I participate in a Bible study on Thurs mornings. I try and go to all the baby/bridal showers and Womens ministry sort of stuff (Ladies night outs, retreats) and of course, DH does all the electrical work needed :) There is also a Monday night open gym Dh goes to also.

Both DH and I have always grown up in church. I love going to the same church as my parents too! I never dropped the routine once I graduated from HS and moved out. It's always been something I do on Sundays and I feel weird doing anything else! :) (Although I'll admit I have skipped a service or two to go to a Seahawks game Wink) We want to raise our children in church but will not force them when they get older but we pray that they will choose to go to a church (even if its not the one we go to)

  • We just changed churches and are starting to get involved in our new one. Both were non-denominational. I was raised Presbyterian and DH was raised 7th Day Adventist.

I checked out the website and it looks very close to what we believe.  Sweet.  Equally yoked.

Edit:  I think there's a dating service called this now.  I am not referring to that.

That's awesome! Its hard to miss when driving on Meridian...we just merged with another church on Jan 1st and its been fun getting to meet a ton of new people. The music is more perky and we actually have a drum set now...it took awhile for the older folk to get used to but we're finally starting to become "one" church now...

lol I actually didnt mind them either...whenever our friends would come to church with us they'd say the music was a little "boring" lol! When we first started going to that church (around 10 years ago) that's all we sung..we've slowly started singing more contemporary stuff but havent forgotten the hymns either ;)

  • I was raised Catholic, DH raised Lutheran.

I always went growing up and I was really involved in college.  Haven't been as much since moving back here.  I never really found a groove with the local church (Snoqualmie), and DH not interested doesn't help my inertia to get going on Sunday mornings.  I think one of the big things I miss is good music, it really puts everything together for me and the local church at times didn't even have a pianist/organist ,let alone a choir.  I also think it was difficult being young, single (before DH) in a church were most things are family based or for older people.  For a while I would go to my brother's family's church (St John the Baptist) but haven't really gone there since getting married.

ttgcole - St Johns is great. My brother's family has gone there since they started and I've seen the church being built and they really have a great variety of programs.  And I love their music!

I'm struggling with what to do in relation to baby's baptism.  I would like to get the baby baptized but seems a bit weird since I've been disconnected for a while.  I'm not sure if it will be an issue that we never got our marriage "blessed" by the church too. (we got married in Hawaii with a non-denominational pastor)

    wow that was an essay.....

  • I was raised strict Catholic. I'm talking church 2x per week and Catholic school from k-12 to boot. Intense! When I moved out I stopped going except for Easter and Christmas.

We've been going to New Life for about 1.5 years now. If feels good to have finally found a church to "belong" to. We're actually having DD dedicated this weekend! We aren't super involved yet, but I've been thinking about joining MOPS and a couple other things.

  • I'm in the same boat as many other women on here:  Raised "christian" church everyweek, church camp every summer.  DH is not interested in it so much now and I can't get motivated to go on my own but I really want DS to have that experience so I've started looking again.  Church shopping is hard!  Thanks for the recomendations thought, keep 'em coming.

  • Ok I was lurking again and wanted to post cause I thought this was a fun topic. DH and I both were raised Christian (though in Southern Baptist churches). I do not particularly subscribe to one (Christian) denomination over the other after attending a non-denom church in high school and attending an inter-denominational Bible College. DH and I now go to Calvary Chapel Eastside in Bellevue. We love it. DH started going to Calvary Chapel churches when he was in high school and got me going. I love it. They are more laid back but every now and again they'll bust out some old school hymns (DH doesn't like it, but it takes me back to my days in the old Southern Baptist Church).
  • Post what church you go to.  If you are uncomfortable with that, what denomination, religion, etc.  We go to Sonrise Chapel in Everett/Lynnwood.  It's non-dednominational and we LOVE it.  As someone earlier mentioned, it's just your basic Bible-believing church....but casual and a little radical and wild, just like we are :-)

Also, how often do you go and would you consider yourself "involved"?  We're there every Sunday and when we can be on Weds for Bible study or other small groups. We're pretty involved with helping to lead a few things too when we can (we drive far to get there).

Is church a new thing for you or have you always gone to church?  We both grew up in Christian families, so we went to church because it wasn't an option. In our mid-teen years, we both met God for ourselves in the wackiest of ways and we've been sold out ever since.  Being a part of a church is a lifeblood for me. I adore it.

The one good thing about this for us, is that even though DH has a difficult time going to church or even believing, he wishes he could.  So, he agrees with the importance of teaching our children about God and faith from an early age so they (hopefully) won't struggle with it like he has.  We're seriously considering Catholic School for our kids as well and DH is totally on board with that.  It will be the execution of it all that will be challenging.  :)

I know! I thank God every day my parents raised me in the church.  It's not going to be an option for our kids either.  I want them to have the same foundation, if not stronger.  When they come to the age where they have make it personal to them, I want them to have the foundation to draw upon.
  • We are Catholic - we try to go to Mass every Sunday, but sometimes we don't make it b/c of illness, and sometimes we just don't put enough effort into getting out of the house to do it, for a variety of reasons, but mostly b/c DD can be so hard to deal w/at church (for those of you who remember my post about it). I feel bad when that happens though. :( We could and should really try harder.

I wouldn't consider us "involved" yet, just b/c we are still relatively new. We were at our old church before we moved, though. We'd like to be again.

Both of our families are Catholic, but neither of us was raised traditionally, if at all. It was a decision we made as adults, and we have been very happy with our choice.

  • Sorry for the double post my mouse took over and went crazy. Ugg!

WatchPot - we usually go to second service. I'm not sure we'll be there this week, but definitely next week. It'd be fun to meet you.

  • Mars Hill Church - I highly recommend trying it or even just watching a sermon online. www.marshillchurch.org. There are about 8 campuses from Olympia all the way north to Shorline and east in Bellevue. I have never been as exicted about going church until about 6 years ago when we first heard Mark, the lead pastor.  I am passionate about our church.

Not as involved now that DS is 15 mos and won't sit through service or go to childcare but we can fortunately watch all sermons online. I wish we were more involved but we will be at another time.

I have gone to church most of my life, college being the exception. I was raised in a Reformed Church.DH was raised going to church and can't imagine marrying anyone that didn't know God. It's really important in our life and relationship.

  • I was raised semi-Catholic. As in my family didn't go to Mass often but I was sent to Catholic school from 3rd through 12th grades.  I was very involved with my parish and volunteering with the youth ministreis in my early to mid 20s, but things happened and I cry in Catholic churches now.

I started going to Eastlake Community Church about two years ago.  It was so nice to belong to a church community again and to look forward to sunday services.  They are actually relevant to my life. That never happened all the years I went to Catholic mass.  Even nicer is that DH started going with me and he loves it.  I'm more involved than he is. I belong to growth groups and volunteer with the children's ministry.

  • I went to a Baptist church all my life...even was the lead female worship leader

but one year ago I was burned by the church, as many are :(

so we are church shopping at the moment. it's verrry hard, especially when you are so into music and feel like you were called into leadership, jumping back in is super hard :(

  • I read through the other responses - am I the only pastor's kid? :-) I, too, grew up in church. My grandpa, grandma and father are all licensed ministers. We were in church anytime the doors were open. I'm pentacostal. DH and I were youth pastors in Everett for five years (2003 through 2008) at Harbor Light Open Bible. We were very involved as the congregation was 150 or less. I led the youth worship band and sang on the Sunday worship team. We were both involved in the drama also. I also sang in the choir. We did a lot more, but those were the main things. I pulled out of stuff after I had DD.

Since we moved to Eugene, we've been church hopping. DH and I desperately needed a little break from full time ministry. I definitely miss leading worship though. We usually attend Calvary Open Bible in Springfield, OR, but have also enjoyed Westside Faith Center in Eugene as well. We almost always go to church weekly, but if DH is travelling we don't and right now, we are not involved in anything at the church.

  • DH and I were raised by our enthusiastic, christian Moms.  DH's Mom is Catholic, his sister is a Catholic lay-minister and his Dad is Hindu(born and raised in India).  I was raised Lutheran.  I went to church on Wednesdays and Sundays with Lutheran Choir Camp over the summer growing up.  Going to church wasn't an option for either of us...

We're both wishy-washy agnostics, though DH is closer to believing than me.  DH goes to an Episcopal church in downtown Seattle every few weeks and I go to be supportive.  He's doing to some soul searching to decide whether he wants to get Connor baptised.  He'd like Connor to be grow up with church, like he did, but he doesn't want to be insincere or half-assed.  I'm just supportive.  I figure he gets enough pressure from his family.

  • Post what church you go to.  If you are uncomfortable with that, what denomination, religion, etc.  I am one of Jehovah's Witnesses. I go to a Kingdom Hall in Bothell.

Also, how often do you go and would you consider yourself "involved"?  DH and I are definitely involved. We believe that "faith without works is dead" so it is a must to be involved. We go to Meetings every Sunday morning and Wednesday evening, both for 2 hrs. We also have family worship night when we spend a few hrs studying the bible just as a family. We go out in the ministry every Saturday morning for a few hrs, I go out during the week about 2 or 3 times. We both participate in our meetings with commenting and giving talks and DH works the sound system and mics sometimes.

Is church a new thing for you or have you always gone to church? It is definitely not a new thing for either DH or I, we have both been Jehovah's Witnesses all our life. We have gone to different Kingdom Halls, though they all teach the same thing. I couldn't ask for a more wonderful organization to be involved with and I to like many of you thank my parents instilling a love of God in me.
