~*~Jas*sGirl RE: Air Con~*~

I was going to email you but since people were talking about it, I thought the conversation might benefit others.

Talk to me a little bit more about the unit you have: https://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11323977&whse=BC&topnav=&browse=&lang=en-US

I'm thinking about ordering one from Costco.  I read the reviews and people talked about it being too heavy to move around easily.  Did you find that to be true?

Also - we don't have the windows that open up from top to bottom - they open side to side.  Do you have those sorts of windows too?  If so, how well did this work for you?

We got a sharp branded one at costco a few weeks ago (this is "portable" floor model, with just the vent in the window..  It has been nice, but I don't think of it as really "portable"  I don't expect it will be moving from our bedroom till the end of the summer.

Our windows open side to side.  DH had to get a 2x4 to screw the a/c vent + expander to (the direction say to screw it to the window, but he didn't think that would work with vinyl windows.  The 2x4 fits pretty snug in the window track (vertically).  You then close the window to be snug again the other side of the expander.  On each side of the expander you are supposed to put this foam strip to create a seal (so between the wood and the expander and between the expander and the window)  You also put a foam strip on the back edge of the window to seal that gap too.

So given all that setup I don't really think it will be moved to another room.

I'm happy though that we have 2 windows in the bedroom, so when it isn't too hot I can still open the other and have a screened window to let air in.

We are going to buy a portable unit tonight and we also have windows that slide side-to-side.  We're checking out Lowe's, Home Depot, and Costco.  The plan is not to come home without one. :-)

Jill made a good point yesterday that the warm weather will probably mean they'll sell fast.  So, we decided not to wait til the weekend.

  • We LOVE ours!!!  It was keeping all of us nice and cool last night!  Its not portable in the sense that you can just pick it up and move it...its on wheels so its has to be rolled.  You know where our TV room is upstairs....then we just wheel it into our bedroom.  Its kinda cumbersome to get rolling but once you do its easy traveling.  However, would be a pain to move it up stairs and such.

We have one window in our room that goes up and down and then the other ones are side to side.  We use the up and down one in the bedroom, but a side to side one in the TV room.  The little vent part you put to the window I think is just so it does not build up condensation.  There is no parts to drain or anything like that, which is uber nice!  So if its not perfect in the window that is okay!  If we use it in the side to side one, we just use a small piece of plexy (sp?) glass to sit on top of the extender part.  However, I dont think you really need that since the cold air is blown into the room from the unit!!  We also shut the blinds down around it if we can.  This helps keep the cool air into the room and not just blowing right back out the window!
