So...Jackson is on day 3/5 without any episodes of bradycardia. We know there is technically still a risk due to the half-life of the caffeine, but we are really hoping he doesn't have any! He passed his car seat test today with flying colors, is up to 4lb 13oz, AND had his feeding tube removed today! He is now on a "demand" feeding schedule. We are trying to establish a really good one before he comes home where he eats a full feeding and sleeps for about 3-4 hours. He is taking about 2 oz with each feed now, woohoo! SO the plan is to come home on Saturday if things continue to go well! That will officially be 14 days in the NICU!
I do have one question. We are formula feeding and the hospital has been using similac neosure 22calorie. Wondering if anyone else is using this formula and could perhaps suggest the cheapest place to buy if you know of any?? The doctors have said that he will need to be on this formula for about 9-12 months! Whatever is best for our little man. TIA for any suggestions!
Re: Tentative Discharge Date!
Lily was on Enfacare 22 calorie and you will see that he will gain weight so quickly that your pedi will probably change that relatively quickly. We were able to take her off the Enfacare after we brought her home.
(I still think he is coming home on Friday. 13 days!!)
I am so glad to hear he is doing so well. Are they sending him home on caffeine?
He came off the caffeine on Monday and as far as I know he is staying off! They are still telling us Saturday but DH and I both think that they might as well send him Saturday because we are READY! We're tired of his assessments delaying his feedings and getting in the way of his routine even though we know these things are still really important. More the husband instead of me
One of the nurses told us that we could buy the enfacare 22 instead of the neosure, but it might hurt his tummy if we did the switch. We have an appt with the pedi right after discharge so I will be sure to ask. And I hope he continues to gain weight quickly b/c I think the more he "fills out" the cuter he gets!
Great news!
Marino was on Neosure for the first 2 months. When he was home, I ordered the ready to feed big bottles from diapers.com (I thought they were a little cheaper). The powder is cheaper, of course. However, you can mix any formula to 22 calories (higher powder to water concentration) so discuss this with your pedi. We ended up switching to Good Start when he was 9 or 10 weeks old b/c we felt like the Neosure was bothering his belly. The GS worked better for us and we didn't need to mix it higher calorie b/c his weight gain was fine and still is (he's 19lb, 5oz at 11 months, 13th percentile for actual age).
