pregnancy & bras questions

So I made the trip to Norstrom this week because things are feeling a little snug and uncomfortable. (I'm 17 weeks)

I'm a bit concerned that the salesperson didn't particullary take into consideration that I was pregnant, just measured me for what fit that day.

Previous fitting (at Nordstrom 2 years ago) was a 34 D/DD - depending on which bra.  Current was a 36D on the first hook (largest).  I had heard when pregnant to get it on one of the tighter hooks so you can loosen as you grow.  Saleperson just said "bras will stretch over time, so always start at first hook."

So I'm worried that these news ones aren't going to last too long as I keep growing.  I know I will need others closer to due date and nursing, but how often did you have to buy new ones during your pregnancy?

Also anyone have any comments on the underwire vs not debate?

Any recommendation on where else to go?

Thanks

Theresa

Re: pregnancy & bras questions

  • Go to Motherhood and buy the bra extenders that give you 2-4 more inches of "band"... that should get you through for a while.

  • I just had to go bra shopping too, I am now 25 weeks and the bras I bought when I was 19w still work. I am now on the second hook of 3-4 hooks with mine and they are both ones with no underwire. Because my belly is growing at an extra fast rate, I noticed the underwire wasn't comfy and was digging into my stomach. HTH!

And Jill, good advice on the extenders. I am going to check those out if needed too. =]

  • Usually it's the cups that runneth over vs. the strap getting too tight, depending on your weight gain, etc, and they don't make an extender for that!  I went in at about 17 weeks to and jumped from a 32C to a 34DD.  She fit me with the cups a big loose, which was good because I'm 24 weeks now and they still fit great.  The next bras I buy will probably be nursing bras.

Ditto. I was a 32D before, and at 12 weeks was a 34F. I got a 36 DD (same cup equivalent) just b/c the cups seemed a little wider which worked better for me, and wore them on a snugger hook. Since then, I still measure as a 34/36 band with, but my cups have gotten much bigger. So I wouldn't worry too much about the band size, as long as you have some room in the cups. Oh, and I stuck with underwire - my midwife said that a D-cup justified underwire, and just be sure that it fit well and wasn't digging in anywhere.

At about 30? weeks I did go to Target and bought a couple of crappy, not-great-fitting but better than what I had nursing bras, just to see me through to the end of my pg. Didn't want to spend a lot of $ since I had no idea what my size would do once my milk came in, but got nursing bras in case they were useful. Their sizing doesn't really work for me and I ended up with 38DD just to fit the cup, so they aren't as supportive as I'd like and I'm pretty sore/tired by the end of the day - but so is every other part of me at this point! LOL . So, I'll just tough it out until my milk comes in.

Sorry for the novel... I guess if I were you I would assume that yes, eventually you'll grow out of what you have, but that's a pretty safe assumption at 17 weeks anyway. :)?

  • Actually your rib cage also expands when you're pregnant, regardless of weight gain.   And, for me, it stayed expanded.  sigh....

My cup size didn't change while I was pregnant oddly enough.   But I have one friend who went from like a DD to an H in her first trimester!

Also, check out Nordstrom Rack - I found a couple of Wacoal bras for $20-24.

I went from a 36B to a 36D in the first 6 weeks.  Fun times.  I'm a little worried for later on..  I'm currently 10 weeks, and the 36D's are still working great.

I've heard of this nursing bra by Bravado (sp?) that some women swear by.  It doesn't have underwire, but lots of women find it comfortable and that it stretches with you too.

     GL!

  • Thanks for the replys and experiences.  I didn't have too much change early, but really felt it the past week.  I guess I'll just wash the 2 news ones I got and go with them until they are uncomfortable..

I also have to go clothes shopping this weekend because my pants are also getting tight.

  • i love love love the baby boutique store at evergreen medical center! they're pretty good at fitting you into the right bra and have about 8 different types of bras at really good prices! my favorite bra so far is the la leche wrap n snap bra which grows with the expanding busom.  they sell  for 19.99.

  • Nordstrom will typically give you the bra extenders for free if you buy your bras from there.  I would go back and ask for some to help you grow with your new bras.
  • I got some cheap ones at Kohl's after I got fitted at Nordies in my 1st tri.  I also started to need to wear a sleeping bra at night around the 2nd tri...that sure helped and they are so comfy.  I went to the Evergreen Baby Boutique as well.  The prices there are great, service is wonderful...only thing is no returns, unlike Nordies.  I got one soft cup nursing/sleeping bra there so far and love it...I need more since I live in this one.  My underwire ones are just getting very uncomfortable, esp in the hot weather.
My siggy never works right! Our bug is almost 3 now! image
  • sigh - I think a trip back to Nordstrom is in my future.  Trying out one of the new ones today and it already seems snug around the band..
