best way to determine hb?

So my doppler is awesome, but the counter thing does not work. It doesn't even calculate my heartbeat so what is the best way to do it on my own?

    I usually count how many beats in 10 seconds and multiply it by 6.

    I count how many beats in 15 seconds and multiply by 4.
