I can't find the story on line to give you a link, but at lunch i was watching the news, and there was a story about a young woman who had pre-e and lupus and many complications during her pregnancy, so they delivered her baby 14 weeks early, not expecting it to survive as she was born <1 lb . . . and the story made the news becuase the baby is doing great - just 8 days old and already 3 lbs, breathing room air on her own!!  the doctors were amazed.

The mom looked very young, but very happy and in love with her baby.

just thought i'd share such an unbelievable story!

  • That is shocking!  We were told that the doctors would be worried if Evan (who was 1lb 7oz) or Cameron (who was 2lbs 15oz) were to gain more than 100grams in a day and especially if it happened very consistently.  But I can't remember what they said was concerning about it exactly.

I might be able to swallow it if it gained 2 lbs in 8 days, but the FIRST 8 days of life seems really suspicious.

I know, maybe that's why i can't find the story online?  But it was on our noon time nbc news affiliate, so that's weird they'd get it wrong. I mean, it wasn't fox news or anything sleazy like that :)
  • That sounds like probably water weight to me. Robbie occasionally retained water (especially after a blood transfusion) and would be on a diuretic for a few days. I'm glad to hear the baby is doing so well lung wise, though. that's amazing.

  • whaaat?  Our LO lost weight in the first 1-2 weeks...water weight maybe?  Sorry to be a doubter, but I'm just confused!

Either way - I'm glad that baby is doing well :)

  • It is definitely fluid!

If Jacob gained more than 90 grams in a day a chest x-ray was ordered immediately and it always showed up "hazy" meaning he had fluid in his lungs. He would then be put on a diuretic so he could pee out all the excess. This always set him back as well since he was see-sawing and he gained weight more slowly.

That sounds like irresponsible reporting to me! Glad to hear that the baby is doing well though otherwise.

ETA: If it is the article mnberry posted above she went from 12.5 oz to 2.14 in 77 days....not 8. Now that makes more sense. Maybe it was a typo that they fixed.
