S/O - Mom's of 2.5 yr old thumb suckers?

Are you doing anything to discourage your DC from sucking their thumb?  DS is addicted with a capital A.  We are trying to get him to not suck his thumb during the day but haven't done much to discourage it when he's watching TV or in his carseat.  Of course we can't do anything about it when he's sleeping.  It's not like we can take it away!  The other day we were outside playing and I kept telling him to get his thumb out of his mouth.  He would just turn his back to me and slyly put his thumb in his mouth.  Addicted I tell ya!

Any suggestions?

  • I have no clue.

    I have pictures of DS sucking his fingers in utero. He still walks around with a finger in his mouth half the time. I have to tell him to take it out to talk.

    <sigh>

  • DD is 3 and so far we just let it go.  She also twirls her hair at the same time, she only does it when tired or bored.  DD is a stubborn girl and we have found out the hard way that if she's not ready to do something, she's just not ready.  Period.

    I'm not worried other than her hair-pulling phase.  I'm glad that's done lol  I figure if she still is at 5 we'll start figuring out how to stop it.  Until then, meh.

  • My nephew twirls his hair, Kori!  A piece right at the crown of his head!  It sticks straight up like Alfalfa!  He's ten and he's been doing it since for as long as I can remember.  My sister has threatened to cut his hair off and she has done it before but he always goes right back to twirling that same piece of hair!

  • Rory twirls her hair when she is tired, too!  She was pretty much bald until 1.5, and even then she would move her fingers in a twirling motion on her bald head.
  • My DD is 3.5 and is still sucking!!  She knows she's not supposed to do it outside of her bed.  I thought when she started school it would fade away but no!  She also twirls her hair as well.  Or my hair, her sis's hair, or anyone sitting next to her's hair!!  (not kidding).

    We have a code word "bubblegum" that we say in public when she starts sucking her thumb and she knows that means take it out.  Of course, many times, that only lasts a short while before sucking again!!

    She did say that when the Paci Fairy comes for her sis's pacis she will stop.  I highly doubt it but one can hope!  Confused

  • Here's DD on Saturday, half passed out on DS's floor.  She has aquaphor on her face, she looks a little strange LOL

  • Both my kids are thumb suckers.  They both do it at night when they sleep, or when they are extremely tired/upset.  They've never done it public or when they are active.  The pediatrician and the dentist have both tried to get me on board with various contraptions and bribes, etc.  I'm not interested.  They can suck their thumbs as long as they want.  Smile
  • I haven't tried to do anything yet.  She sucks her thumb in the car, while she's watching TV, and before she falls asleep.
