FYI Fountain vs. Canned Diet Coke

And maybe other sodas..

Fountain Diet Coke has saccharin.   Canned has Nutra Sweet.

I actually thought saccharin was banned, but apparently not.  From what I've read, I guess Nutra Sweet doesn't hold up well enough in the fountain/syrup situation.

But seriously that makes me really limit fountain diet coke!!

  • Huh.  I never knew that.  Interesting.
  • Wow I did not know that.  Now I'm gonna have to stay away from the fountain.  I know saccharin was once known to be a carcinogen but I guess the powers that be changed their mind.  I believe aspartame isn't all that good either but figured it was the better of the two.  I know my thinking doesnt make much sense.  I'm trying to stay away from the artifical sweetners in general but it's hard sometimes when I dont want to have all the calories of the real thing.

  • Wow, I had no idea. ?Good to know.
  • wow I just read wikipedia about saccharin... so in the late 70s (which is what I remember), they wanted to ban it b/c it caused bladder cancer in rats.  Since then, the studies havent' shown it.   So it says

"In 1991, after fourteen years, the FDA formally withdrew its 1977 proposal to ban the use of saccharin, and in 2000, the U.S. Congress repealed the law requiring saccharin products to carry health warning labels."

SOOOOO... maybe it really isn't all that bad.  It sounds like it's been studied to death.   Maybe studied better than Nutra Sweet?   Gosh.  It's all so crazy.

Usually the only artificial sweetener I have is one Diet Coke a day.  So Ifigure that can't be *that* bad.

  • Another thing someone who worked at a restaurant just told me about fountain drinks....most restaurants don't clean the nozzle very well IF at ALL. So a bacteria and mold build up sometimes happens. If you were to take the machine apart, you'd see it, but most places only do that for maintenance.  You can'y usually see it, but it does get in your drink.  I was so totally grossed out by learning this.  And one day at panera, I used the dill it yourself fountain machine and the lemonade fountain TOTALLY tasted moldy.  maybe it was my subconscious, but now I can't think to stomach fountain drinks.

Probably info you didn't wanna know....lol

IHHM can you please confirm this could NEVER be true so i can have peace of mind again..lol
  • I had NO idea!  I wonder if this has something to do with why I have to pee so much when consuming fountain diet coke. I've had this problem since I was a kid - I have to go frequently after drinking fountain diet coke(sometimes every 20 minutes for over an hour) but it's never happens from canned diet coke.   Hmmmm....I think you may have just solved some weird bodily function of mine that has had me stumped for years!

I guess it still doesn't explain why it happens but at least I can deduce it has something to do with the saccharin and my body doesn't tolerate it well!
  • well go read wikipedia about saccharin... they said something about some form of sodium in it that rats couldn't process right and that's why they get bladder cancer, so maybe there's something about it that jsut rushes through your kidneys?

We take the nozzle off (and the the rubber part that holds the nozzle) and soak them (and the fountain gun) pretty often. ?They're clean, I promise. ?:) ?When I worked at EMP we did it there too. ?So based on my experience, restaurants do in fact clean them.

    Feel better? ?:)?

Thank GOD! I hope this is the norm. I felt so traumatized by the conversation...lol

  • I can confirm that when I worked at Burger King (oh so long ago) that we took apart the soda nozzles and soaked them each night.  I openned and had to put them all back on in the morning.

Thats interesting about Fountain vs canned Diet Coke...my MIL is crazy addicted to fountain Diet Coke.  She lives in Houston and all she drinks is fountain diet coke by the gallon...no literally she goes twice a day and fills up her gigantic big gulp.  She is so addicted that even when she comes to visit she has us find a place that has fountain diet coke each morning to fill her up.  I even have some pro-photos at my wedding with her classy big gulp cup she brought on one of the tables.
