Trying to Get Pregnant

RE or stick to OBGYN?

So I know what the majority will say but please listen to why I ask...

My OBGYN can pass through certain visits to my insurance to cover some testing. However, I really don't feel that I am being monitored the way I would like to be. RE visits (all) will not be covered at all. However, I do feel I will be monitored better. My fear, if I stick it out with OBGYN is that they will continue to put me on clomid for next few cycles (without the best care) and then I will not be able to take it again with RE. I am really leaning more toward RE but scared of expense. Anyone else in here that has seen an RE without the costs being covered by insurance? If so, what should I expect?

I would make an appointment with my OB and explain my concerns and what type of monitoring you need in order to continue with their practice.  They may end up doing what you need if you explain to them why.  It's worth a shot at least.

  • what about looking for an obgyn that specializes in infertility...mine is known for this, which wasn't the cause with my old one...
  • if you are in need of better fertility care - go to the RE.   That is their speciality.

Thanks, Moo. I have actually tried. They said b/c they aren't specialists and do not have one on hand, none of them are experienced enought in infertility to offer the type of care I need. I don't trust this information b/c it came from one of the nurses who I am not too fond of. I did meet with a Dr. that I felt really comfortable with and we did see eye to eye. I have left a message with the Dr. so I can speak with him directly with your suggestion. Thanks.

I agree but this may sound ignorant, however, we fixed my issue of ovulation these past 2 cycles. DH is getting SA this week. If SA comes out OK, do I really have an infertility problem or should I just wait it out again a few cycles?

I explained this to my OB/GYN and he is doing the proper testing starting next cycle. He told me he wants to O on Clomid one month before start doing sonograms every couple of weeks considering I have to drive about an hour to the office.

well... technically infertility is defined as a year of TTC.    I O'd on my own.    DH was very borderline MFI (basically most months his sperm were just fine, only on one SA did it come back only a couple points low).   We were infertile and needed the RE.   Clomid failed me.

  • When that choice came up for me I chose the RE.  These Drs. are highly trained specialists and have a much better understanding of fertility issues than a regular OB/GYN.

  • I know this could change when/if I get there.  But, my plan is to stick w/ my OBGYN until a year or unless we find something seriously wrong during my BW or HSG coming up.  I think if my OB/GYN couldn't monitor me, and I was taking clomid, I would want to go to the RE.  But, I can understand your concern w/the money aspect.  I guess you have to decide if that's a risk you're willing to take, in order to avoid all the additional costs.
